I use foam I cut from an old army sleeping pad, which is green and works great. Wrap a #8 hook with thread, cut off, dab a little Zap-a-gap, take a peice of the pad that you've cut about 1/4" thick or so, wrap it around hook, tie in two or three places to make a vague insect form, like a big ant or a beetle or, spider, whatever. The foam can extend over the hook eye.

I add rubber legs. It's deadly, and it floats high enough so you can use a 3X long nymph hook. You can tie the foam in front so that it makes a pop, if you want to.
