As a historical ref. the first time I ever saw anyone use nylon rope to catch gar was when I lived in MD. The bank fisherman on the Potomac (around National Airport) would fish for them with minnows. Prior to tying on the hook, they would thread a 6" piece of rope onto their line, then tie the hook on. They'd slide the rope down close to the minnow then fray it a little.

A few years ago I saw the "gar fly," and knew it would work. I picked up a couple and have good luck. (as I said at the fly fling, I've only used the weighted one's though. I just figured they'd be a byotch to cast on an #8-#9).
