Get a couple books on "study/love of bugs," that's the best way to learn. As far as patterns in N. GA go---alot of folks use attractor patterns, including myself. In Early spring and really all year--GRHE kicks A$$. Come June throw on an Elk Hair caddis. Wooly buggers are always producers. Muddler minnows take fish in late summer/early fall (fished as hopper imatation).
That tan, elk hair caddis is a good go to fly. If they don't take it on a conventional "dry" drift, try skating it. Keep it moving/twitching and your line will tighten. Caddis are also great for bluegill.
