If you travel around a bit, and in your travels stop at the local
fly shops, keep an eye out for the "scraps/remenant" boxes. They
are usually found in shops that tie their own flies. You can pick
up some really good quality stuff for cheap. As far as hackles are
concerned....I would partner up with someone and split the costs of
VERY good hackles. If you get a good neck it will last you a while, but
will cost a bundle. So I usually split the costs with one of my buddies.
Talk to your friends that do a lot of hunting, or contact a taxidermist. They
usually have "scraps" of deer hides, bears, birds etc... Most of them
will give that stuff to you, or charge a very minimal price.
And this sounds disgusting, but one of my friends has a trick of
gathering fresh road kill. He says it is a great way to get rare
feathers (such as woodpeckers, etc..) Just skin, and cure the stuff.
