met a longtime self taught flyfisherman the other day and i found it interesting that he did not know what a double haul was. Bobby Bell taught me this simple technique a few years back and i now use it on almost every cast. I had read about it in books before but could not get a grasp on the timing. I will use a haul (either single or double) on every cast except for pick-up and laydowns and roll casts. It will give you more distance and help overcome a weak backcast. I urge all you novice flycasters to master this technique, one of your experienced friends can have you hauling in just a short time and you will notice an improvment in your casting right away. I will not try to explain the mechanics and timing of this technique but perhaps some one else on this board can put it into words.
