The primary problem with making a long haul, is that as the length of the haul increases, so does the recovery time of the line hand. The line hand needs to move back to the hauling position for the forward cast, and moving up excessive distances will affect the finished product.

A 3-5" tug is all that is needed to load any rod. I regularly fish with #8-#12's.
