Fished a remote area of Talking Rock Creek Saturday morning and caught a dozen or so redeyes along with a couple of rock bass and a few bream. But back to your post --there were a lot of trico spinners over the creek early (nothing rising to them) but trico may have been the black and white flies you saw. They're really small, less than #20. If you saw trout rising, the tricos might have been what they were taking. If the fish are keying on them, they won't take much of anything else. If you go back and encounter similar situation, take some of the littlest trico spinners you can find and fish one as a dropper behind an elk hair caddis (cause the trico is too little to see by itself). If you saw trout rising, they were feeding and can be caught on something with the right fly and right presentation -- probably. Trying to catch fish under these conditions is the challenge that makes this such a fun sport. Sometimes it's a matter of trial and error -- try something and if it doesn't work, go on to something else. Through trial and error, you know what wasn't working -- maybe something else would have. That's why I've got three flyboxes cramed full of flies and still need the tomatoe juice quite often.
