Nymphs aren't easy, but they sure produce. I don't like strike indicators, either, but when I use them, I tie them about twice the depth of the water. The kind that allow you to slide up or down seem to work best for me.

It's close fishing, and I mean CLOSE. About like twice the length of the rod for me. You need to strike as soon as you see the line hesitate, like someone said. This means a lot of false strikes, a lot of lost flies on the bottom rocks. I like a splitshot about 8-12 inches above the nymph, which I don't like to used weighted, because it changes the way they float.
