FYI-
SINCE MARCH 1995, PERSONS RECREATING ON THE CHATTAHOOCHEE RIVER BETWEEN BUFORD DAM AND THE GEORGIA HIGHWAY 20 BRIDGE ARE REQUIRED TO WEAR A U.S. COAST GUARD APPROVED PERSONAL FLOATATION DEVICE. THIS INCLUDES WADING, BOATING, OR TUBE FLOATING. THIS REGULATION WAS PROMPTED BY CONTINUED PUBLIC CONCERN OVER RIVER SAFETY. THE 2.6 MILE SECTION PORTION OF THE RIVER BELOW BUFORD DAM CAN BECOME EXTREMELY DANGEROUS WHEN WATER IS RELEASED FROM THE POWERHOUSE. TYPICALLY THE RIVER, WHICH AVERAGES 44 TO 58 DEGREES IN TEMPERATURE, CAN RISE 6 TO 11 FEET DURING WATER RELEASE. SINCE 1983, THERE HAVE BEEN 5 FATALITIES ON THIS SECTION OF THE RIVER. OTHER SAFETY PRECAUTIONS IN EFFECT ON THIS SECTION OF THE RIVER INCLUDE: A WARNING HORN SYSTEM THAT SOUNDS PRIOR TO WATER RELEASE, A RADIO STATION(1610 AM)THAT BROADCASTS RIVER SAFETY MESSAGES AND WATER RELEASE SCHEDULES, WARNING SIGNS IN PARK AREAS AND ALONG THE SHORELINE, A TELEPHONE RECORDING(770-945-1466)THAT GIVES SAFETY INFORMATION AND WATER RELEASE SCHEDULES. ENFORCEMENT OF THE PERSONAL FLOATATION DEVICE REGULATION WILL BE JOINTLY SHARED BY THE CORPS OF ENGINEERS AND NATIONAL PARK SERVICE. FOR MORE INFORMATION, PLEASE CONTACT THE CORPS OF ENGINEERS AT (770)945-9531.
