Saw your messages on NGTO about adding calcium carbonate to the Hooch to
increase insect life. That's already being done in some parts of the
country in small streams. If I remember correctly, the basic method that's
being used came from Europe. Don't hold me to this but -- they build some
type of small dam to build up a head of water,. Just downstream, on the
bank, a circular tank is placed with an inlet for water coming from above
the dam. Crushed limestone is added to the tank. I think that the inlet
is in the side of the tank close to the bottom so that the water swirls
around in the limestone and comes out the top of the tank where it's
diverted back into the stream. This method is presently being used to
offset acid runoff from mining operations.
