I knew someone would ask me that, and Iím not
sure I have a good answer, but here goes:
I have a picture of a four year old boy on my
desk holding up his first fish. Heís got a twinkle
in his eye, and he is about to bust from the
excitment. Tonight, forty six years later, the man
that the little boy has become is not going to be
able to sleep tonight in anticipation of tomorrows
fishing trip. I do not know where this exuberance
to catch a fish comes from. I sometimes think that
there must be a genetically linked gift of ďspecial
essenceĒ given to fishermen. Itís like trying to
create life. Scientists can literally build a body, but
without that special ďspiritĒ, it will remain just
an assembly of chemicals, and without this special
gift of fishing essence,a person will never truly become
a fisherman.
I donít know where my ďessenceĒ came from, because
my father nor any of my adult mentors fished. However,
from the time I was four, Iíve always had this passion.
The sport has nearly killed me twice, cost me thousands
and thousands of dollars, gotten me arrested, shot at,
and almost divorced. Yet tonight Iím like a kid on
Christmas Eve because Iíll be on the river again in the
morning.
I wish I had an answer, but all I know to say is thank you,
because it is the grandest adventure of my life.

Thank you to everyone who shared their feelings about
fishing. It helped me place my life in a better perspective,
and gives me comfort to know Iím not the only piscatorially
challenged person on the river.
