Had basically the same thing happen to me in South America while I was a Peace Corps Volunteer. Two lines running down the inside of my left arm. The bacteria had entered through a small cut on my finger which didn't appear infected. I awoke to my arm feeling like it was BROKEN! (Hope your, eh, groin didn't feel that bad).
Evidently it was bacteria that my body, not having grown-up in Bolivia, wasn't used too. Antibiotics took care of it in about three or four days. Don't let it scare you out of the water it's a freak occurance. As a whitewater enthusiast I've seen/heard about a lot of skin related problems (river-funk), mostly fungal in nature. Clean and dry your gear, Lysol spray works well (also works on your feet).
