First of all don't knock em till you tried of my
favorite areas on the hooch was Abbotts bridge(Ga120)and
wade up stream casting to all cover on the banks. One of
the best fly I used was a 8-10 white Matuka streamer(actually)
the wing was a black spotted white hen feathers-it looked
like a crappie)let this streamer float down next to bank
cover then strip in short quite jerks. The biggest brown I
ever saw came out from under a tree not 100 yds above bridge
on left bank---He chased my brown Matuka(8).His eyeballs was
the size of quarters.Just above this spot I caught a 14"
male Brookie hooked jaw and all( ant fished just
under surface)2.When going above Helen on the Hooch go in
at Low Gap up and be sure to try a 8,10 Muddler and
fish it both wet and dry before you give up.3.The Jack's
-go in at Bear Camp Ck trail when you get to Jacks go down
to the gorge(the trail will be RT side going down stream
and the river will be 200 ft or so below you go to end of
gorge and fish up.Use a dark grasshopper pattern(I use a
well greased Muddler)Why? The warden in this area says all
the big browns are caught on grasshoppers the locals get
from mountain sides and they are dark brown. The area is
really good but believe me there is only 2 ways out--fish all
the way through or go out the way you came in.4.The Consauga
--this same warden I met on the Jacks saw me on the Conasauga
and told me if I really want to get into trout I had to get
above hikers---SO--don't start fishing tillyou get above
Panther CK.Falls trail.Best advice I ever got and dont be afraid
to go small(20-24BWO).5The best Brown trout water in the
mountains is the middle section of Jones CK.When in doubt
use Adams dry(16) or Montana(8)And if you see some giant
stoneflies cast a Muddler dry at them--I did and got a 17"
brown.Tight lines hope this helps someone.GRW
