The Coosawattee is formed by the confluence of the Ellijay
and Cartecay Rivers in Ellijay. It is stocked with trout by DNR in
Ellijay and just downstream (through Gilmer County's River
Park). Downstream from Ellijay, it gets too warm to be a great
trout fishery. You will catch mostly bass (Redeye and Largemouth), and
the river is beautiful. However, public access is quite limited now due
to housing developments between Ellijay and Carter's Lake. You can
float it. A couple of outfitters in Ellijay can set you up with a
canoe and even pick you up - I would suggest Mountaintown Outdoor
Expeditions (MOE). I have also heard that the river downstream from
Carters Lake has runs of striped bass in the spring. I haven't had
the chance to try that. Good luck if you go!
