: What about the fishing and places to access on the Cartecay River upstream from Ellijay. I understand there's some public land somewhere along the river but don't know where or how the fishing is. Can anyone share any information?

Sorry to take so long to respond to your message - I haven't been
online lately! There is some public water upstream of Ellijay.
Travel GA 52 east of Ellijay. Approx 3 - 4 miles from town Gilmer
County maintains a garbage collection site at the county jail. Turn right,
drive by the collection site; this road continues right to the river.
The land along the river here is under lease to DNR and is public.
Like the Coosawatee, the river here is marginal for trout, but you will
catch some, especially early in the spring. Good fishing for bass and redeye.
You can also get in the river on upstream at the Lower Cartecay Road bridge, and
at the GA 52 bridge, but the land is private upsteam and down. Best bet
is to float. Get a canoe or tube, put in at Holt Bridge off Big Creek Road, and
make arrangements to be picked up at the Lower Cartecay Bridge or Blackberry
Mountain bridge. This way you can fish the entire stretch without having to worry
about being out on private land. Take note - on weekends there are a lot of
canoes on the river to run the rapids. Doesn't seem to hurt the fishing much, but
you will be interupted from time to time. Good luck, let me know how you do!
