View Full Version : Chatooga-year round?
Is the Chatooga a year round stream? I'm thinking of going on wednesday. Any suggestions for fly patterns this time of year.
Thanks
Bret
Brett,
Yes, the Chattooga is year round. Be careful the tribs leading into the Chattooga are not.
I have'nt heard any reports lately. I imagine it will be slow, deep nymph fishing. Hares Ears, wooly buggers. John Cross(Habersham Co.) can tell you what you probably can expect at this time. You can call him at 706-754-6092

hey there bret this is john cross's son just stopping by to tell you to give dad a call and he will be happy to help you out, he has a knack of catching those chattoga trout i can never get to hit.
Bret...
Give John a call...He is a very nice and informative guide that will share more with you then most. I have talked to John about the Chattuga conditions and his advice was right on target. Great Guy!!!!!
Also remember John is one of if not North GA best guides...keep it in mind if you know or here of someone looking for a great day of fishing.
Good Luck....

Thanks for the information. I did not get a chance to call John Cross as I didn't get to check the messages until late tuesday night and I left fairly early on Wednesday. What a great day! Middle of January and I was fishing with just a long sleeve t-shirt. Fished my favorite stretch about a mile above Burrells Ford. Only caught two (1 brown, 1 rainbow), but it was worth the trip. My batting average was pretty low though as I had 6 or 7 hits that I missed; must be a little rusty.
Both fish were caught on a rust colored wooly bugger. I did see several fish rising in the slower pools, must have been eating midges. Tried a griffiths gnat to no avail. Also saw a number of mayflies coming off, looked to my untrained eyes like blue-winged olives. Is that normal this time of year, or was it just the unseasonably warm weather.
Saw one fisherman leave when I got there, other than that did not see a single other person or car. I should fish in January more often.
Thanks again, I'll keep John croos in mind if I or someone else needs a guide.
Bret
