Flyfishing-related classes at Alpharetta First United Methodist Church

For the last few years, flyfishing has been an exciting part of the recreation program at Alpharetta First United Methodist Church! The flyfishing-related portion of the program has grown to include three separate courses – flyfishing, fly tying, and rod building – and the spring schedule has recently been set.

These courses are taught at Alpharetta First United Methodist Church, located at 69 Main St. (Highway 9) in Alpharetta, not far from Ga. 400. Classes are taught by Steve Hudson, a church member who has enjoyed flyfishing for many years.

For information on individual courses contact Steve at 678-297-7999 or via email at steve.hudson@cmdg.com.

To register for these courses, contact Kim Morris at the church office at 770-475-5576.

>>>>> Flyfishing: This course is designed for anyone who would like to learn the art of flyfishing. The basic program includes three sessions -- two Friday evening cl****sessions and a Saturday fishing trip.
The classroom portion, presented in a relaxed and informal atmosphere, covers not only basics such as tackle selection, knots and streamcraft but also includes plenty of time for progressive casting instruction. We’re fortunate to have a carpeted indoor gym that allows casting practice regardless of weather.

The on-stream portion of the course gives you a chance to put your new-found skills to use. We'll spend a half day on one of our state's streams, then stop to eat barbecue and swap fish stories on the way home.

This year’s first course is scheduled for Friday evening, May 7, and Friday evening, May 14, with a fishing outing set for Saturday, May 15. Cost of the cl****is $25. This course will be repeated several times during the year.

>>>>> Fly tying: This three-session basic fly tying course is designed for the beginner who is interested in learning the art and craft of tying flies; it’s also a good refresher for a more experienced tyer who might need to brush up on the basics.

Emphasis is on basic skills – and in the course of learning them you’ll also learn to tie a number of very effective patterns for use in Georgia’s waters. All tools and materials are provided for use during the class, though participants should bring a good light and a pair of small, sharp, fine-pointed scissors.

This cl****meets on Sunday evenings from 6 p.m. till about 9:00 p.m. The next fly tying course will be held April 18, April 25 and May 2. Cost of the cl****is $20.

This course will be repeated several times during the year.

>>>>> Rod building: Ever wanted to build your own flyrod? This rod building workshop is a great way to learn how! The workshop is held on three successive Sunday evenings. No prior experience is needed, and specialized tools and consumables are provided for use during the class. This cl****takes you from scratch through the process of building your own rod. You’ll learn what goes into building a custom rod, acquiring basic rodcrafting skills as you go. We even build a case in which to keep your new creation!

The next rod building workshop will be held Feb. 28, March 7 and March 14. Cost of the cl****is $25. You will also need to acquire the components with which to build your rod; contact the instructor to discuss what you’ll need and how to get it. We begin working on the rods during the first session, so components should be in hand by then.

>>>>> Other fishing related activities at AFUMC – This spring, AFUMC will be repeating its popular parent-child fishing workshop. This workshop, designed to introduce kids and their parents to the joys of fishing, is targeted at children from kindergarten through fifth grade. A Friday night get-together introduces basic fishing skills in an entertaining and enjoyable format – and then a Saturday afternoon outing gives the kids a chance to practice what they’ve learned! The outing is followed by a covered-dish cookout, which is followed by presentation of prizes to the lucky fisherkids!

Cost for this workshop is $4 per person. Parent participation and presence is required. And don’t forget your camera!
