I see that most on the board are Fly-fishermen. I have never taken the opportunity to do much fly fishing, prefering to use spin equipment. Anyone else?
MM -- I started fishing for trout in Arkansas in the mid 60s using a Garcia-Mitchell matched spinning outfit though I had flyfished for bass. Happened on Joe Brooks classic "Trout Fishing" and it converted me.
Kinda like switching from checkers to chess.
Eventually started tying my own flies which adds another element to the equation.
If you really get into it, it's all quite scientific and challenging to try to "match-the-hatch" or come up with the right fly for the situation.
If i get hungry, I'll blow all that elitist intellectual junk out the window and revert back to bait or corn or cheese and even my spinning rod to catch what I need to eat if flies aren't working for me.
For me, there almost ain't no better feeling than catching the wiley trout on a fly that you've tied or invented after checking the stream to figure out what they ought to be biting. It proves you're smarter than the fish.
I still spinfish occasionally, but I truly love flyfishing.
I heartily recommend that you give it a try.

Oh yeah! I plan on moving into flyfishing soon. I have friends who do alot of flyfishing so I do understand matching the fly to the hatch, etc. I agree it is more complex, I just enjoy being on the stream. Thanks for the info.
Mikie,
I'm almost exclusively a spin fisherman. I have a quantity fetish, and I can't satisfy it with a flyrod.

Hi....Hooker I didn't know...Have you ever gone to see someone or talk about your problem to them this using a SPINNING rig...You might get labeled as a Neanderthal or Meatchucker..I am really glad you came out of the closet about this...Do you feel better????You saying you have a problem is the first step of recovery...Hooker .....what kind of a spinning rig do you fish with...What are your favorite lures???Do you have any photos of your big catches????E-mail them to me I would like to see them....One spinner to another...GOOD LUCK fishing...Spinner
I am for the most part a fly fisherman...not a purist though. I started out as a spin fisherman and moved to fly fishing and although I do look back time to time my true, at heart fishing is done with a flyrod. I must say althought fishing the spinning rod with the Hooker is a real close second. Dave is an expert on the Hooch and I hope to say the same about his striper fishing here real soon. Also don't let Hooker fool ya....I have seen him hook into some big gar with a 4 wt flyrod and he sure looked like he was having a blast to me. He is a true spin fisherman at heart and very good at that, but the flyrod always rides in the boat with him.
Dave....I am ready to catch some stripers. I am going to invest in a new rod and real...so I will need some expert advice.

Spinner,
Ya, I feel reel bad until I get my first hook set.
I'm kinda partial to G-Loomis rods, but the new Falcon Lowriders are darn good to. I use Shimano reels because of the dependable drag system, and my favorite model is the Striadic. As for lures, I fish crankbaits about about 75% of the time, and throw dropbaits and plastics when I have to. Rapalas, Yo Zuri's, and Castaic's are my most dependable baits.
Send me your E-Mail address, and I'll send you some pics.

Glad to see other spin fishermen out there. I have been fishing up in N. Ga for about 15 yrs. Started out as a corn person but after trying a rooster tail and a small 3ft rod this is the way to catch trout. I have more fish that get off because of the small rod but that is the fun part. I do catch more fish also because of the small line you can put on these rods and the way you can work a stream. GLAD TO HERE FROM YOU SPIN GUYS.

Message Spinman...Hi..Nice to hear from you..I am jealous..You are in an area that season is still opened..Part of the reason I'm on this board is to scratch my trout fishing itch. What type of lures do you use?? Do you have any photos of big catches???E-mail them to me..I use panther martins/husky jerks/mepps/rooster tails/ and a night crawler on night time fishes...I am from southern wisconsin and I am a daily trout fisherman during season..My season is March till May catch and release only and then may through september for regular fishing...The early season artifical only and barbless..If I find a large trout in early season I don't fish it...I like the option of keeping it if I feel so inclined..Opening weekend of regular season I kicked butt...Two on the wall....A male so hook jawed that there was a 1/4 inch gap between jaws...23 1/4 inches...He was kinda skinny..His tail was beaten up too...I fished the hole for 30 minutes before I changed types of lures...The first cast with a husky jerk size 8 blue/silver "Fish On" the rest my taxidermist only knows...Tell all of the different lures you use,,,Spinner...
Spinner,
The E-Mail address you sent me had fatal errors and will not allow delivery. Also, we caught 42 trout this morning. You oughta move to Georgia, there is always jobs available in law enforcement, and you can fish 12 months a year.
