View Full Version : Spring Fing 99...Idea's
I have the outline for Spring Thing 99 and what I need now is some input and idea's from all you NGTOer's out there. Here is the way it went last year and seemed to work well.
It was held at Jones Bridge Park on the Gwinnett side of the river.
We held it on a Sunday between the hours of 10:00am and 2:00pm with lunch starting at 11:30am.
We grilled hotdogs and burgers on the grill and had people attending bring something to pass.
We had a Unicoi Outfitters and Blue ridge Rods on hand with display booth's...Very helpful!!!
We had door prizes that we gave away...Thanks Unicoi, Hooker, Super Chub, and other's.
We planned a float trip after dinner....Generation schedule snuffed that out though. This would be after and those that wanted to float could head out at 1:00pm...Lets hope the Corp will work with us this year.
I am open for any suggestions or idea's that you may have. I plan on setting a date in the next week or so, but the agenda is still flexable after the date has been set.
We had around 40 people show up last year and as the board has grown alot in the last year I hope that the turn out will too. NGTO will supply all the meat, table ware, and location...all you need to do is bring a dish and put it down on your calander. The Spring Fling is open to anyone that would like to come, It doesn't matter if you are a lurker, new to the board, Family member, guest, or just want to see what we are all about. Come one come all.
Thanks in advance for your help....

There is probably a better chane for a zero generation on saturday.
Just a thought.
Ich
That sounds like a very workable plan. The way they have been generated the last few weekends, it's likely that we would run into the same problem as last year. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/frown.gif But there is not really another place that would be suitable. But-- it's worth a shot.

Flydoode,
Is there a picnic area/tables at Buford Dam near the boat ramp?? I have a 10' by 20' canopy kinda like what is used at funerals, if needed.
It would be fun if we could do an afternoon get-together followed by a campout/cookout, swap lies around the campfire, and fishing at dusk and dawn. Is there a cow pasture/ field we could do this near the river? That big field at Abbott's Bridge would be nice but the NPS probably wouldn't go for it. JB Park works great but I mention the above if a change-o-scene is needed.
My $00.02.

Food for thought.
Also....The stick-on name tags we had at last years Fling were really helpful. Lets do that again. Also would be nice if everyone could bring a guest who is internet-active, and introduce them to NGTO.
ok, I know this is crazy, but.......
it's just a thought.....What if we have the Spring " Thing" at Unicoi State park? I don't know if it's even possible to arrange such a thing on semi-short notice, but it would ( if poss.) give you Hooch-addicts the chance to see some REAL trout.Smith's,Chat,Coleman, Tallulah,Spoilcane,Low gap,Jasus, bear den,Chatooga, west fork,....take your pick ! Nothing personal against the Hooch ( although it does give me the " wllies' http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif )I just thought it'd be nice to get outta the city w/everyone. Maybe I'm just dreamin' ! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
Mountian-Owl
Come on now owl, you aren't still scared of that big water are ya. I don't think it will bite you. I do think the sceinery would be better in the mountain country but the accessability of the Hooch is a little better. Would be nice to have a couple of extra tables for people to set up their vises and swap some patterns before the fishing part started up. Maby a guest speaker would be nice. If enough show maby a small auction might be nice for a good cause. Just a few thoughts.
I second the speaker thing. How about Nick Lyons, Mark Mcguire, Steve Bartkowski, Dan Reeves,.... http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
Anyway, anybody want to join me in a john-boat ride? http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif ( I still can't get anyone to comment on whether that's possible or not ! Help me out here....I got an extra seat for non - tubers.I'll admit it , the tubes scare me, and I'm just not real thrilled about a long hike back upstream. I be lazy AND chicken ! )
So can I boat it or what?

Owl,
The water from Medlock to JB is smooth as gl****til you get to the old trestle at JB. There you'll encounter some mild whitewater. Shouldn't be a problem if you stay to the right.

I've boated it lot's of times with a friend in his jon boat. We'd put in at Medlock and motor up to Rogers bridge-then float back. Always caught something. Just don't be there when Hooker is around. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif I don't know the water from Medlock to Jones Bridge or JB on down.
I vote for the dam.
Easy wading right in front of the boat ramp.
But I really want to float to the hatchery again.
Only drawback I see is it getting crowded.
When is this fling?
NetBoy
I'd really appr. some company in the boat. and someone to shuttle the boat back to the put in to get it back to my truck. Anybody game. I promise I'll only kill one of us. Hopefully not the brave volenteer ! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif

Owl,
I'll do a shuttle with ya' if the Little League schedule doesn't conflict with the Fling. We can put the boats in the water at the upper point and leave my fishing partner and your fishing partner at the put-in. Follow me to the take-out where I'll park my truck and trailer. We drive back to the put-in in your vehicle. At the take-out we load your boat in my truck and my boat on the trailer. We drive to put-in to get your truck, then go to the Fling. Whew!
Or we could just float til we get tired, and then when we get to a bridge, call a cab on the cellphone. Don't laugh! It's been done more than I care to mention.
The Drifter
Explain the cab thing....and wouln't we float after the Fling.....it'd be an early morning otherwise?! I'm in if I can make it. I'll ask off and let you know ASAP. !!!!!!!
Briggs, William, Kerry, Ich ??????any takers for a john-boat float. I don't know what'll happen , but it's sure to be an adventure ! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif

Re: the cab thing
Put your boat in at Medlock ramp. Float to the Jones Bridge ramp. Call a taxi with your cellular phone. Taxi takes you to Medlock ramp where you pick up your vehicle (Taxi also takes twenty of your hard earned dollars.)
Drive your vehicle to JB and pull the boat out of the water. Drive home.

Owl,
If I can get the day off I'll be glad to jon boat with ya.
Is this a catered trip? As the guide, are you garanteeing a limit? Do you have a taxidermy man who can mount my trophy?
http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/wink.gif Ich
Wow, you guys are fast. Unfortunatly, I only have room for one and darn it , Briggs got the spot first. ( JK briggs http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif ) ANYWAY, even Briggs needs alternate plans, in case I can't get off work for it. ( I'm putting in to be off today.)Hope to see everyone there !
Owl
Now all I need is detailed info on how to get to the take out point and f NGTO'ers can watch the " yacht" while Briggs and I drive my truck to the take-out .Can i get a map(city) or something, Drifter? I'm not familiar with ATl. at all., unless you count going to BPS ! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
Owl,
Under "Fishing Connections" and "Show Me the Hooch" I tried to give a pretty good description of how to get to the Gwinnett and Fulton County sides of Jones Bridge Park. Medlock Bridge Park is the exact same directions as the Gwinnett County side except you go up 141 past Jones Bridge Road (again it may be something like East Jones Bridge Road, somebody confirm this). The entrance to Medlock Bridge Park is probably less than a mile past Jones Bridge Road. It is on the right. A reference is if you cross the Chattahoochee River you just passed the park.
There are lots of maps on the internet. I use <www.lycos.com> all the time. You can zoom in on just about any road you want to find.
goody,goody..... http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
I will be posting the directions to the Fling under the events forum very soon. If you have any questions please e-mail me.
