Hi Folks,
Its just three weeks till NEG Clave! Here’s another quick update just to keep y’all informed on whats going on.
Directions Corrections
After Tom Wallace and I took our scouting trip a couple of weekends ago, he pointed out a flaw in the directions I posted in the last update. The goof was in Option 2 from Atlanta. Here’s the correct version
From Atlanta – Option 2
Take Georgia 400 north toward Dahlonega. 400 will end at its junction with Hwy 60 and will become Long Branch Road. Continue on Long Branch Road until it intersects Hwy 52. Turn right on Hwy 52 toward Cleveland. After about 3 miles Hwy 52 will fork. The right fork (Hwy 52) will go toward Brookton, the left fork (Hwy 115) will go toward Cleveland. Bear left at the fork and continue on Hwy 115 toward Cleveland. At the square in Cleveland, turn left onto Hwy 129. Just north of downtown Cleveland, turn right onto Hwy 75 toward Helen, GA. Follow Hwy 75 north through Helen to Robertstown. At Robertstown turn right onto Hwy 356, which passes through Unicoi SP. Just after you p****over the Unicoi Lake dam, look for the campground check-in and campground entrance on your left.
Eats
I forgot to mention in the original announcement and past updates – for those of you who will bring young’uns that don’t care for jambalaya, if you like we can have some hot dogs and chips on hand – just be sure to let me know so we can be sure to have ‘em there.
Demonstrations
At past claves, demonstrations, both impromptu and planned, have proved to be a big hit. This year should be no exception. I’ve found that a few folks who will be at the clave have been doing some neat stuff that I think many of the rest of you would be interested in.
Tom Wallace, my buddy from ‘Bama, ties some beautiful deer hair b****bugs and says he’ll bring his deer hair and tie a few up for us. I’ve got several of his bugs in my collection and I’m not exaggerating when I say they look great!
Salty Stines, our lanyard expert, will bring his beads, braids, and tools to make a few lanyards. Don’t laugh at ‘em folks, these things are darned handy and with the proper “extras” adding that certain “mojo”, I can’t see why anyone would want to be without one.
I’ll even try to get my act together and build a board that I can bring to make some furled leader butts. OK, I’m no master at making them, but they usually turn out pretty good and I like they way they work for me. Given the amount of free time I’ve had lately, there’s a pretty good possibility I won’t get a board made so I have a back-up in mind – yarn strike indicators. They aren’t hard to make and I like ‘em a heck of a lot better than the foam kind.
I’m sure there will be some fly tying going on at some point as well so be sure to bring your fly tying stuff.
Final Raffle Format
As usual, the raffle format has evolved a little bit and here’s what we’re going to do this year. The general raffle will be limited to those are fishing and who donate a raffle prize. If the kids and or spouse isn’t fishing – they don’t get entered. Sorry to be a pain about this but I had a couple of complaints in the past and this is the only way I know to put that one behind us. We’ll go around as many times as we can then put all of the tickets back into the bucket for a grand prize (sorry, I ain’t telling what is until the clave but y’all are welcome to try to guess). To get your raffle ticket, just bring your prize to me or Doc Shaffer before supper on Saturday and wqe’ll trade you a ticket with a number for it and put a matching ticket in a bucket.
Special raffles – we have a couple of items whose donors have asked that that every attendee – fishers, spouses, and kids alike, be eligible to win. To get your name entered, see me or Doc and we’ll give you an “entry form” (slip of paper or cardboard) for each family member and you’ll write your name (or family member’s name) on the entry form and we’ll put it into another bucket.
Finally, we’ve received a couple of items that we’ve decided to use for a silent auction. Tom Wallace is making us an oak laptop flytying desk and we’ve also received a complete grizzly rooster skin which Doc tells me is mighty nice.

Well, that’s about it for this update. Will post at least one more update before the clave.
