Aaron,

Anything special planned for the Fall Fling? Are you open for suggestions?

I'd like to see something a little different.
Maybe an overniter at Vogel or Unicoi using their picnic pavilions and campgrounds.

Or maybe an overniter at Hiwassee Outfitters Campground?

Callaway Gardens?

Buford Dam Park?

Jack Edwards' house?

I dunno. Any thoughts, feedback, etc?

I AGREE with the Drifting One......somethin a bit more substantial ! I vote for Jack's house because of the proxcimety, proxceim.pro......closeness. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif BUT, i think Jack votes for somewhere else ! hehehe

Unicoi sounds fine.......is everyone aware that it's ( Unicoi ) pronounced " U- nee- ko- uh "??? I wasn't until I saw the info channel in Helen.......I still call it " U-ne-koy " ! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif just a little fact of knowledge....mark your calanders, it may be a long time til the next one ! hahahah

Sounds like a great idea to me. I will vote for the Hiwassee but I will go anywhere. Have any of you fished the Nantahala during the delayed harvest. It can be alot of fun to and not far away

Thanks for reminding me Drifter! Let's open this up for suggestions. We need a place that:

1. Can hold us all!
2. Can handle the fishing pressure of 30+ folks
3. Is not too far away (within 2-3 hours of Atlanta)

Of course in the past we have had them at Buford Dam once, and Jones Bridge three times, but I am open to a new spot. True DH will be in full swing, but I can't think of a DH stream that could handle the pressure, except for perhaps the newly created Amicalola.... thoughts?

Aaron,

What do you think about Hiwassee Outfitters Campground? Is it too far?

The river could definitely handle the crowd, and the bunkhouse sleeps 26 folks. Maybe we could reserve it.

They also have a Fly Shop that sells licenses and other goodies, and a restaurant. Besides, the big brown trout will begin to congregate at the Stairsteps in late October!

smith's would be crowded with our group and the 30 other folks that would prob. be there. I vote for Drifter's spot. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif

Drifter....The hiawassee sounds great, depending on the date. The bunk house would be the way to go.

SC,

Why would the bunkhouse be the way to go? Economics? Convenience?

NiteOwl,

I am not a guide but would be glad to show you the little I know up there. Or if you want you can come with me to explore some new spots.

If the Fall Fling is held on the Hiwassee....remember to bring your float tube and PFD. During times of low generation, wading is not a problem, however when the turbines are open, you really need the tube!

Gee Creek and the Tellico River are also closeby.

FWF,

The bunkhouse idea is not imperative...but if its raining, it'd be nice to get outta the rain as opposed to hanging under a tarp or tent. The bunkhouse would also be cheap for the budget-minded. They also have cabins if anyone is so inclined.

I've got a funeral-home-type-canopy that I could bring, to afford us some more shelter.

Food for thought.

I am doing fine up here....but a little on the cold side...fall is showing its face and the temps are getting cooler and cooler. Let me know what I can do to help you out on the Fall Fling as I really need to get back down there and use my float tube.

Take care...

Why not Island Ford? It's close. And my own selfish reason is I've never been there.

Smiths is a bit small for 30+ people all at once wouldnt you say ??
The only issue with smith's would be this... I would hate to be the guy or gal who drives 2 hrs to get there expecting to have a little solitude and just a few people to compete for spots with, take that last turn and see 30 people hanging out in the parking lot, fishing the stream etc..
Gotta admit, the Hootch is a little bit more sizable for a crowd.

But then again, how many people actually fished at the last fling? I know our group wasn't very big. I'm sure if the fling was a bit more contained (like at Smith's) that more people might fish though. Just a thought.

There is plenty of water to fish within a short drive from Unicoi.

.....cause FlyTyfish smoked me there.....( How's that ? ) ( it's true BTW ! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif hehehe)

Ok, there are several streams close to Smith's , but all of them with the exception of the Hooch , couldn't handle more then a half dozen of us at one time( in the same stretch). If the Hi is big enough, it'd be awesome for us to be able to stay reltivily close together...it'd be cool to fish with several different people in the same day....and I def. don't wanna be paired with FlyTyfish or Ichtie all day. ( They both nearly skunked me at Smith's.....Let's see those big trout you got at Smith's , Ich ???? You lose the pics I gave ya ? remember the one that "chased" the chub??

Anyway, I'd like to see the HI. just heard someone caught a 9 POUNDER out of the DH section......sounds like a winning river to me !

Owlie,
Aaron has the pics from Smith's and some salmon and steelies from Alaska. He just needs the time to load them. You know how busy he is. Last time he had a few hours he could have used to load them, he went fishing instead. Go figure!!

Aaron,
The NEG Clave that we had at Unicio turned out for a great base of opperations for us. Lots of places to fish all around. Only thing is that a lot of streams will be closing at the end of the month which will cut the number of fishing holes in half. An overnighter is a lot of fun though. It is a great thing when everyone can gather round the camp fire at night and shoot the bull on the days fishing.

Some great ideas here, and we are running out of time! I need a volunteer to simply pick a place and let's make plans. If you are interested call me at work - 404-467-3132
