Here are some details:
Date: Afternoon of Oct 1 thru 3
Where: Smokemont Campground
I am heading up there on the Afternoon of Oct 1. Hopefully beat the traffic out of this town and get there for some evening fishing.
Sat and Sun are just plain fishin and exploring days. Do not really have particular rivers to fish in mind.
HERE IS THE SCOOP.
Oct 1-3
Staying at : Smokemont Campground
Fishing: where ever (we can either split up or fish one of the bigger drainages
What to bring:
Fly Rod or Spinning Rod (no bait allowed in the park)
NC or TN fishing Lisc. You DO NOT need a trout stamp to fish in GSMNP.
Sleeping bag. A warm one cuz it will get cold at night(or you can get a room in Cherokee).
Tent.
Water and whatever food or beverages you wish to consume. Waders ( the waters are chilly)
Flies: Buggers, hares ears, pheasent tails, princes and tellico's. Soft Hackles, midges(if your into them), BWO's in the16-22 range., Hendricksons have produced for me in the fall size 16, irrisistable adams, or adams in general especially the parachute variety.
Let me know whatcha think. Post a reply. Thanks,
Jeff G
Directions:
It is @ 160 miles from Atlanta and takes around 2 1/2 hrs to get there. And the drive is really pretty. Just look out for Police Officers at Tallullah Falls, Franklin NC and between Sylva and Cherokee. There is a strip of "Flea Mkts" and the police set up radar there.
Here are the driving directions to Cherokee NC via Mapquest.com
1: Go North on I-75 NORTH to I-85 NORTH(Exit 103). 4.3 miles
2: Go North on I-85 NORTH to I-985 (Exit45). CONSTRUCTION: BETWEEN EXITS 37 AND 45.
29.1 miles
3: Go Northeast on I-985 to US-23 (Exit 7). 24.0 miles
4: Go Northeast on US-23 to North Carolina. 57.6 miles
5: Go North on US-23 to US-441.
33.0 miles 6: Go Northwest on US-441.
13.8 miles
Once you are into Cherokee you will follow the signs and/or traffic to the entrance to the Park. Smokemont Campground is @ 4 miles up the road on the right. Just look for the signs.
I will be driving white jeep cherokee with GA Wildlife Tags 143AY is my tag #. Will be at the campground that evening. Will be fishing Bradley Fork that Sat morning.
Sidenotes:
You can purchase a NC lisc at the Walmart outside of Franklin. Warning! The fishing/outdoors outfitter's in Franklin do not sell NC fishing lisc. You will see a couple on the way up there but they cant help you. And you cannot purchase one on the Indian Reservation. One shop on Main St. in Bryson City sells them or the Ace Hardware Store in Maggey Valley. So I would suggest picking it up at Walmart. The lisc is good for a year from the date it is purchased (if you go for a full yr.)
There is an IGA at the Walmart Shopping Center if you wish to purchase food there. Or there is one in Bryson City and one on the Reservation heading towards the casino.
Adult Beverages .aka. alcohol can be purchase in Bryson City. Or en route while in GA. You cannot buy any on the Reservation nor in the county the reservation resides in. .
Single Hooks only are allowed in the Park. NO bait is allowed and it is enforced.
Once again, let me know who wishes to go to get an accurate headcount to see if we should reserve a group site!!
Thanks,
Jeff G.
