View Full Version : 2nd Annual End of DH Trip
Here we go again. Join us at Brookside Campground for the Second Annual End of Delayed Harvest Trout Fishing Trip. I am planning it for the weekend of May 19 - 21. I will be calling Kathy at Brookside and letting her know, but this time I would like you to call here and let her know if you are going. That way I do not need to try to keep up with the number of people.
On Saturday night, we will have our usual pot luck dinner. Everyone bring something to share. As you post to let us know you are coming, let us know what you are bringing, that way no one will duplicate.
I sure hope we get a good turn out. All of the last trips have been more fun than you can believe. Show up for the time of your life and catch more fish than you can believe.

Deep in the heart of the Nantahala wilderness the cll of a single loon goes out. Make that a "loonie". http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif I'll try my darndest to get off and be there !
In a nutshell, folks..... we fish, we laugh, we discuss, we eat, and I believe there is some form of liquid entertainment that mkes the rounds as well, fo rthose of you who would like it. What is it...BYO Mr. Williams, I think. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif Ole man, I'd catch a trout in my teeth to see you there! I hear the cabins are nice and cozy. Greg? ICth? Everyone? Milliam?BEEEEEEEEEEDUb? Preston?( I know I know, it's a haul - have you tried on the waders yet?)Let's take up the whole wonderful river just this once.
Here's to NCDH ! CHeers !
It's fun fun fun. Esp. when Lady Jane gets going and actually says her nine alloted words for the night! ( She's so quiet!)
Well I sure hope that the lack of response does not mean that no one is going to show up. I will be there one way or another.
04-27-00, 09:20 AM
Grizz, I put in to be off. We'll see?! I know LJ plans to be there. MAybe there is an NGTO meeting that weekend! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif haha
ahh...now I know what you are talking about. Let me check schedule and see what I can do to be there. I just purchased my NC lisc last week, so may as well use it.
I will check work schedule also and try to make it. Sounds like it will be a blast.
04-27-00, 07:23 PM
Grizz..I'll be there. Emily may come too. She wants to see BeeDub in action again. She didn't quite grasp that male ritual she witnessed. The only way I won't be there is if I have to take Julie to Coker for her dance audition. She's been accepted so I don't know what the audition is about, just know it's something we have to do. Woohoo! College girl! Two down, one to go. Anyone want to donate college funds?
04-27-00, 08:21 PM
Beedub ? Is he still alive? http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/wink.gif
Welcome aboard Brent ! Enjoy yourself and hope to see ya there!
04-27-00, 11:21 PM
Grizz, Owlie, and all;
I would truly love to go,,,,but my daughter is graduating from Florida the week before then I'm taking her to Ohio to visit relatives...I will be back up this summer w/ the wife and in the back of my mind, I'm already planning another weeklong trip back to god's country....
you'all have fun ,,I'll miss ya
i'd love to go, it was great to meet some of you over thanksgiving, but it looks like that will be the last weekend i'll be in WI http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
hopefully i'll get to meet spinner (and see if all those fish are real)
[This message has been edited by betzel (edited 04-28-2000).]
Owlieroo, I'm here for ya, pal. Grizz, you know all you have to do is mention Nantahala and I'm ready to go. Lady Jane, "male ritual?" Careful, now. Wouldn't want to start any rumors. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif Just make sure everyone understands it was a real "guy thing." Actually, I thought I was rather restrained for the sake of your impressionable youngster. Yep, I plan to be there. I'll introduce everyone to some of the local law enforcement types I have met. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/wink.gif http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/frown.gif
04-28-00, 09:09 AM
anyone know how i can get in on all this Tom Foolery? i am new to the club and would like some info on the trip.
I will be there, unless something unforseen(sp) pops up. Discussed it with my other half last night, and she said, "Go say hi to the fishies, but dont get too drunk.." gotta love it.
I may go check out SlickRock Creek while I am there. I have talked and read about it, now it is time to go see what it is all about.
Griz: need the phone number for campground and name of town up there (for mapquest directions)
The Ole Man
04-28-00, 10:56 AM
What's the lowdown on the cabins nearby? My tent is long gone and I don't have the luxury of caravan ownership that Griz does. What town? Names , phone # for cabins, how far away from campground? Anyone stayed there?
OK all, here is the information you requested. First, the main base of operating and fun is Brookside Campground. Please call Kathy there and reserve your space. Let them know you are with the NGTO bunch. I have had her set aside some spaces but she needs to know how many are coming. Phone number is 828-321-5209. For those of you looking for where we are on the map...just look for Topton, NC. It is just below Bryson City, NC.
As far as the cabins, the closest are Nelsons Hideaway Cabins and Campground. Phone 828-321-4407. They are very clean but nothing fancy. If I remember you have to bring your own linen. We had some folks stay in them last Thanksgiving and had no complaints. Old Man, I know there are many more in the Nantahala area that are probably alot nicer, you may want to check with Nantahala Outdoor Center for the name of some if Nelson's is not what you are looking for.
Kiserzoze, as far as you coming up, all you have to do is make your reservations and show up. I do charge a bottle of Vodka to new members. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/wink.gif We would be glad to have you.
BeeDub, aka "Poacher", I knew that there would be no way to keep you from there. Looking forward to seeing you. And LJ, I already have your camping spot taken care of.
As I said before, everyone bring something for dinner on Saturday night. We sort of do a joint meal. As it gets closer, how about everyone post what you are planning on bringing, that way we will not end up 15 desserts.
Looking forward to seeing everyone.
04-28-00, 10:59 PM
http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif What's wrong with 15 desserts ??? http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
I have tenative conformation from my immediate suporvisor that I will get at least some of that weekend off. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif Yeah !
Beedub, does "male ritual" have anything to do with "cheating?". Guess we all know now you really are a cheater! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
jeffg...I'd like to join you to Slickrock or Fires. Heard great things about both of them and have been dying to find some wild fish since last fall. ( However, I will say that wild fish are numerous( very) in the Nan. DH section. Oh, if I only had a week off !
hmmmmmmmmm.......I've got a week coming in the fall ! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
Kiserzoze...welcome aboard ! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif Feel free to join us in the great trout state of NC ! Bring your camera......it's beautiful!
See ya !
LJ, I'll bring both my rods and you can use my 2wt. if you like and I'll use the other one. They're both Orvis, so I can slay the fishies either way! hahaha http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif ! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
It's offical Kitchen pass in hand and
time-off from work approved!!!
Looking to fishing ,camping and who knows
what else on NGTO DH trip to the the nantahala.
Who knows maybe we will get lucky and catch
that million dollar 2 legged trout rumored
to be living in the area:.))))
05-01-00, 10:22 PM
.....n.n.nnnn..not me ! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/wink.gif hahaha
Alright Brent! Way ta go ! Love to welcome new folks to the party! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
Look out fish !!! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
Hey Grizz and Beedub..........what flies to tie and bring??? Anything special?
I am surte "The Poacher" would say to bring Power Bait. I hear it is his favorite secret weapon. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/wink.gif
No really, last few times I have been there I have done real well with Hares Ears. Alot of Caddis in the water. Make sure you have some EHC's in the 16-18 size. I have also always done well with small Adams Parachutes for those rising fish.
05-02-00, 10:46 AM
Thanks Grizz. I got a note from the Flying Poacher that said he did not prefer powerbait, but instead used a secret concoction of bread dough and fish oil, seasoned with corn vinegar for the really good streams in the OFF season! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
That recipe can be fried up into a real taste sensation if it isn't working on the fish!
I've had good success with grhe's - in season and out. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/frown.gif
05-02-00, 08:07 PM
Hey Charlie, look out --- SNIPER on the roof! ! ! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
BeeDub, We'll just start callin' you Bubba BeDub, or BB for short http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
KB, you really know how to hurt a Bubb.. guy.
05-03-00, 06:12 PM
Someone at the KFD suggested " BubbaDub " sorta like BubbaGump, I'm thinking.... http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/wink.gif
Charlie one is down ! Charlie one is down !
05-05-00, 02:59 PM
Just checked the moon phases for May. It will be a full moon for this trip. The full moon looks awesome in the gorge.
Fairweather, Does this mean that we can count
05-05-00, 04:21 PM
A Full Moon!!!! In that case, I guess you guys can count me in. I've always wondered what Owl turned into during a full moon http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif. I've also heard that the poachers really come out then, so I'll be seeing you BubbaDub. Now if I can just talk Owl into sharing that tiny tent of his. I'll bring my own ear plugs. Anyone else want some?
05-06-00, 11:16 AM
I think that means Fairweather is sleeping in the gorge !!! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
You better watch out there, Milliam or I'll sniff some cat fur before I leave for the trip !
( highly allergic to cat dander...makes me snore like a train ! )
who turns into a brook trout on full moon nights
05-06-00, 10:15 PM
I'm about 90% Brent. I'll let you know when it's a lock.
05-06-00, 11:58 PM
Well, if there's any yardwork or anything I can do to help lock in that other 10% you just holler !!! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
$20/hr seems fair doesn't it? http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
FairWeatherFisherman, come out and play. It's gonna be good. Drifter? That goes for you, too. Be there. Preston - come north, young man! Guaranteed fun for everyone!
05-08-00, 01:49 PM
Hey BubbaDub, when you gonna come west and let me show you some of "my" bass and bream? http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
who fishes the Nan tommrow !!!!!!! ( go on, get jealous! )
05-08-00, 03:43 PM
Been busy on my end. Just pulled out my lawn chair used in the first freeze out DH trip. The chair is burnt up. Small and large burns all over the thing. Wonder how this happened.
Warning To All: If the fire embers come out, run for the hills. Take you chairs, small children and call the fire department. Adults at play, caution.
Looking at the calendar, have not done any thing stupid of late. It is about time.
Joe Carnahan aka. HoochRat :)
Glad to hear that you are going to make it. So you found burn holes. I wonder how that happened. Sure could not have been from me, I was over making snow angles.
05-08-00, 09:06 PM
Woohoo! Hooch is coming! Hmmm...seems I remember "Hooch Angels" as well.
William, have you totally lost it? Are you nuts?
BeeDub..you were restrained all right..Emily whispered to me "Mama are they drunk?" I replied, "No honey, not yet, they are just being men. You ain't seen nuttin' yet." To which she replied, "Whoa!".
Hey ya'll..it's gonna be the Grizzman's birthday. No need for a campfire that night once the candles are lit.
Glad I'm back home. I just loooooovvvvvveeee the Nant.
Anyone out there seen or heard from FlyRod lately. Are you out there FlyRod. You need to make it to the trip. If any of you have his email address, send it to me so I can contact him.
Ole Man...Call me about shareing a cabin.
Update from brookside
up there today and only a few reservations
for next weekend
Just a reminder to call kathy to save your space
Thanks Brent for the update. Please if you are going do call. It can get busy this time of year.
Brent, you mentioned next weekend. If you are referring to the upcoming NGTO expedition, it's two weekends away - the 19th through the 21st. Wouldn't want you wondering where everyone is! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
You dont mean that someone would show up a weekend before the actually camping trip would you? http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
Uh, well, umm. It's just that I'd hate to see it happen to anyone. Not that they wouldn't still have a great time. (smart***!)
I was scouting, alright? Gimme my bottle of mandarin back.
Beedub, That is Next weekend,
Just a reminder for all THIS weekend is Mother's Day forget it and you might not see next weekend :.))))
05-10-00, 12:19 PM
Grizz..that's the way those poachers operate... get there before anyone else hoping they won't get caught.
Scouting? yeah, right.
I just called and reserved a non-flammable site. Let the games begin!
05-10-00, 03:58 PM
Hope ya'll can allow a lurker to join what sounds like a party with a fishing trip instead of the other way around, I just called and reserved a spot. I am anxious to put faces with some screen names and also to fish the Nant. See you all in nine days.
I will be makiing a reservatoin for that friday night, but more than likely will have to come back to atlanta on that sat night.
Owl...do you wanna hit slickrock on sat? or just wanna hit the Nantahala...I am going to try and sneak up friday day but more than likely will be getting there late.
FFDAWG, Glad you can make it will be alot of fun and fish and who knows what else
Also there will be a special class for

05-11-00, 06:05 PM
Well I got my site reservation at Brookside for Friday and Saturday night. I'm not sure what time I can get up there on Friday since I have to work at least part of the day and I don't know which part yet.
Anyway I'm looking forward to seeing the crowd up there. Looks like a good turnout.
05-12-00, 12:14 PM

The Owl will be fishing somewhere( the Nan if I can't get any takers on early fishing Friday) on Friday morning, pulling into camp around lucnhtime and fishing the Nan some. I'll be there all three days...somewhere in the Evil Empire there must be rebels, infiltrating the inner works of the whole shabang ! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif hahaha
Can't wait to see everyone. and to see the trout !
Oh and I was also toying with the idea of running over to the smokies...?!?
[This message has been edited by NiteOwl (edited 05-13-2000).]
Owl, I should be arriving at brookside
around lunch on fri
Maybe the nat will stay clear for an afternoon of fine fishing
See everyone friday
This past Saturday there was a hatch of Green Drakes on the river. You might want to bring a supply of GRHE in size 8 and size 8 dries.
Mayflies the size of butterflies is an unusual sight.
I plan to fish the river Sunday so I will see some of you this weekend.
I sure wish I could make it this weekend. I'm sure ya'll will have a blast.
BeeDub, just try to obey the rules. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
Green Drakes!! Did I hear Green Drakes?!!!
I did not even know that they were on the Nantahala. When I fished Penns Creek in Pa a couple of weeks ago, I fished during the spinner fall of March Browns. Never had I seen a mayfly so big. Sure hope the Green Drakes are still here.
Now for the first posting on food for Saturday night. I will be bringing a large pot of Catfish Stew. The bottle of red wine to go along with it will be provided also. Alright, what is everyone else going to donate?
I am looking forward to seeing all of you there. I will be arriving early on Friday, hopefully before lunch. Got to find those Green Drakes.
05-15-00, 07:50 PM
Somebody tie me a few !!!! I'll pay for them. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
Food eh...I'l bring some brats or something for those of us that don't like to eat fish. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif I like it...about once a month. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
Grizz, I'll look for ya..I should beat you there! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
I can't wait.
OH and RoyC ! Good to hear from ya...hope to see you on Sunday, then. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif

05-17-00, 12:35 PM
I think I'll bring some Cokes and such (for all you mixers) Any other suggestions? Bread, buns, mayo, etc.????
05-17-00, 01:24 PM
I'll bring something with substance besides the birthday cake. Don't know what yet. Maybe I'll bring the grill and do some veggies.
05-17-00, 04:43 PM
Just wondering does anyone know if there can be a "page 3" on this board ? Shall we see? http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif hahaha
I emailed some of you....go check out www.hearme.com (http://www.hearme.com) ....could save you some long distance....and it's the easiest voice chat program and quickest download I've ever seen. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif Lil FYI there... http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
I will also be bring some dolphin (mahi-mahi)

05-18-00, 11:05 AM
and now for post #135. hahaha C'mon...page 3 dang it....page 3 !!!! Hear Netboy might show up. Gotta whatch him, he's sneaky....he'll slip in your hole at Smith's and catch all the fish if you ain't careful ! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif hahahah

I tell ya, I wanna fish with everyone, so many great folks, so little time. See ya there......
I would like to see if there is a page 3 too. Guess that would be some kind of record here.
Just so ya'll know. All of you going to the Nat this weekend, I hate every single one of you.
Well, maybe not really, but I sure wish I could go.
Ya'll have a good time.
Still feeling guilty about cake
05-19-00, 08:14 AM
KB...you should...(rubbing in the guilt) Shame! Shame! And now you're gonna miss Grizz's birthday too! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/wink.gif
Got the stuff for grilled veggies last night. See y'all Saturday.
I've got the secret fly.
05-19-00, 08:45 AM
You wouldn't know a secret fly if it bit you on the ear ! ....can I have one? http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
Hope that my cake is not the one that KB did not get. It may be a little stiff by now.
I'm cooking Rice-A-Roni. It's great outdoors. Trust me.
What KB said. Put me down as envious too. Ya'll have a great time.
05-22-00, 12:23 PM
Well, we had another great trip. There were coals on the Dub's head, and fish on the end of everyone's lines ! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif Rain made it messy, but everyone seemed not to care. I enjoyed fishing with everyone( that I had a chance to)...so much water, so many friends, so little time....)
Farewell sweet Nantahala...
Look out wild fish !
05-22-00, 03:30 PM
Marie and I had a great time. It was good meeting Chris and Deane and seeing the rest of the regulars. Ours thanks to Jeff for loaning us the spare reel.
Marie really loved the river. We fished that pool just above the third bridge, just downstream of the little waterfall (the one I cracked my ribs on last year).
House was still standing when we got home so the trip was a success.
I knew we could do it PAGE 3 it happen
Thanks again to evryone for a great weekend
Well got to say, one more great trip in the history books. Even a little rain could not stop us. Glad I got to meet a few new folks. Chris you are welcome to come to any trip. Glad you caught a "few". Fairweather, glad the trip ended uneventfull for you. Would not have like to read about a wrong way driver in the paper the next day. BeeDub, as usual, I can always count on you for a good time. Pyrotechnics and all. Owl, I did not even hear you snoring, guess I drowned it out. Brent, your cooking was almost too good. Hate it when someone shows me up. I am still waiting for my get out of jail card too. Milliam, if you ever design a new vice let me know. I want to see one. Oh yea, and stay out of my fishing hole. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/wink.gif JeffG, had a great time taking turns for those fish. I will fish with you anytime.
For all of you that did not make it, too bad. It was a great one.
Sorry, Susan, I did not forget you. Thanks for the cake. It was just gooey enough.
Griz, you're the only person I know who likes his cake rare. BTW, we're trying the steak rub tonight! Thanks, everyone, for another great trip. Deane, come on back down south now, ya heah?
05-23-00, 10:33 PM
Whoooo hooo page 3 !
I didn't hear you either grizz ol bud.
Thanks for the fireworks too.
