I have been talking with a few of you in person or via email or this board. It seems there is some interest in another group trip to GSMNP this year. I think the first weekend of June 2-3-4 would be the best dates. That way everyone who is on the Nantahala trip can have a weekend between trips to take care of any domestic issues before pursuing the trout again for another weekend.

Depending on how many are going, and what not, we could reserve another group site, or get sites right next to one another if that suits everyone better. We can stay whereever, Smokemont, DeepCreek etc.... (just do not stay in Cataloochee if it is raining. Mud city!)

The fishing should still be mostly dries that time of the year, with some sporadic hatches of mayflies and caddis.
The start of tourist season(like it ever ends there) so the roads may be busy, but most of the streams will not be too bad.

Plus, as Cocoon mentioned at Kid Fishing Day, the Tuck is DH until end of June, plus there is alway smallmouth in the Tuck downstream near Bryson City. (havent fished for smallies up there yet, personal goal for the year though).

But let me know if there is any interest in this, if so, then we can start on making it happen.
Thanks,
JeffG

Jeff,

I am in for the trip. I would vote for Deep Creek. I would like to see what kind of fishing from there. I did not know that the DH was still on the Tuck then. I also want to get into the Smallies, so let me know when you want to pursue them. I had planned on doing that last year and just did not get around to it.

Griz,
At Deep Creek, we have to make reservations. It is easy getting a single site, but a group site/mutliple sites could be an issue.
Hopefully the tubers will not be out in force. If there are tubers, @ 1 mile up from the campground is the cut off point for tubers.
On Deep Creek it is best to hike up 2 miles anyways before fishing. There are some beautiful holes in the lower section above the first wooden bridge, but that section also gets pounded. Dries are usually the ticket on Deep Creek with some stonefly nymphs etc...
Noland is right down from Deep Creek. Full combat fishing stream. It is lined with trees, mountain laurel etc...so once you are in the stream, it is hard to exit(usually) so you hike up the stream while you are fishing. This one does not get alot of pressure aout 1 mile up too. I havent explored this one as much as I would have liked to. I do know from personaly experience there are some nice browns that live in that stream!
Forney is there too, but requires a 4 or so mile hike into it. Would be a good one to hike in and camp at or leave before dawn and get out before the sun comes down.

Lower Deep Creek is rumored to have some nice smallmouths, same with Noland where it enters Lake Fontana. So we can always check that out.
But yeah would like to catch some smallies this year. Havent fished for them in a while, and the ones I caught on lower Hazel last year, made me miss fishing for them.

OK I am ready to plan the trip. I do not mind where it is. Lets just go. Tell me when and where and I will be there.

Bad news (well good news for me) may make me back out on the trip I even tried to plan.
My folks may be in town that weeekend, and seeing they live in MD, and that family always comes first, I will not be attending.
They are going to finalize their plans in the next week, so I will know for sure what is going on.....and whether or not gsmnp is on for me.
With the responses that I am getting (none) it may be just griz, myself and my roomate. More whiskey for all!

Well Jeff, I hope you can go but I do understand about family. Dont worry about the responses, if the trip does come together, they will come. Just let me know as soon as plans are finallized and I will get after the others. I always know a few that cannot keep away from camping.

Hello everyone, I'm new to the sport as well as the boards. If you don't mind letting a newbie tag along, I'm off on the 1-2-3 of june (maybe get the fourth off), and would like to take part in the trip, as well as volunteer an F-150 with an eight foot bed if you need to haul gear. I read the boards everyday so let me know if I need to forward information to anyone.

Braz, you are more then welcome. We will just have to see if this trip is on or not. If you can make it, you could always try the Nantahala trip the weekend of May 19-21. It is always a good time and you are more than welcome.

I'd love to go again this year, was up on Deep Creek a month ago and got Skunked! Water was high, but we fished it hard, caught one 2" trout and a 4" Deep Creek Cutthrout (Dace I thing) I'll put in on my calendar, then check with the Wife.

If this thing comes together it would have been my first outing with someone from the boards and believe me you don't know how bad I was looking forward to it, but "unfortunately" I'm going to be in Argentina from the 30th to the 8th of june.
My wife is from there and I had promised her if I got the week off I'd go with her, might even get a chance to get up into the mountains of Bariloche and her mom is a great cook and this will get me some "credit time" so you can bet your a** I'll be on the next one.
