Hey Y’all!
I made my campground reservations for NEG Clave at Unicoi State this morning and decided it was time for a quick update to relay some information.
In talking to the “reservations specialist” I found out that while we can’t request specific campsites, we can request a “type” of campsite (i.e. water & power vs. non-water and power sites) and we can also request to be in the same general area so that hopefully we won’t be so spread apart like we ended up last year. Here’ the drill:
First, call 1-800-573-9659 (8:00 am - 5:00 pm Eastern, Monday through Friday) and ask to make campground reservations. You’ll be transferred and will likely be put on hold for a few minutes but unlike some phone systems, you’ll get to talk to a person in a couple of minutes instead of a machine. When they ask what kind of campsite you would like, tell them you will be tent-camping but would like a site with power and water hookups (two advantages – you can park much closer and you can hook up lights at night for tying flies, etc. if you want). Also, in order to get us all in the same area, be sure to tell them that you would like to be located “near the Davenport party”. If you have already made reservations give them a call, be sure to have your reservation number handy, and just ask them to revise your reservation and they should be willing to do so.
BTW – if you haven’t already made your reservations, DO IT SOON! The number of campsites with water and power are limited and tend to fill up much quicker than the regular tent sites!
Fishing reports from the area: If the weather doesn’t get too hot real early and we get a little rain, the fishing should be good around clave time. Tom Wallace and I went up a couple of weeks ago and did fairly well (except during the hurricane that blew through that Saturday). At the time, green caddis emergers, copper wooly buggers, and BH fl. pink worm patterns fished deep were the ticket for us. PT nymphs and GRHEs were also reported to be working. However, by the end of June, dries and terrestrials should be very effective too.
I know it’s a bit early but directions to the Helen, GA area and specifically to Unicoi State Park, as well as a lot of other useful information, can be found on Scott Cunningham’s website at http://wnctrout.com/negclave.htm We are still adding to the site and there will be a few changes to the driving directions (nothing major – just a couple of clarifications).
Finally, here’s the updated attendee list which includes names of everyone who has given me a response from “Maybe” to “Hell yeah I’m gonna be there!” Y’all please do me a favor, if you’re bringing a friend, spouse, and or kids, please let me know so we can get an accurate count for Donald’s jambalaya and cannolis and also for the raffle. OK, here’s the list:
