View Full Version : Kids Fishing Day Jones Bridge
The Kanooka Chapter of Trout Unlimited(Gwinnett Co) will host our 8th Kids Fishing Day on June 10th. It will be at Jones Bridge Park (Gwinnett Co) for kids under 16. We will stock the river with 2,000+ trout. Bait and assistance will be provided. It will start at 8:30 a.m. ending at noon with a free hotdog lunch and lots of prizes.
Questions, call GCP at (770) 417-2200.
Any NGTO volunteers are welcome and/or just to bring their children. You know the rewards after your Kids Day.
Hope to see you there!
Jim
Missed the lasy one due to a Scout Campout.
If you would, could you please give me directions coming from the south side of Atlanta via 75 at McDonough?
Last time I tried to find Azalea park, I found Island Ford instead then found it then got lost in Cobb Co. for an hour trying to find 285 (zero knowledge of the north side). Plus the kids get anoying after 3 hours of driving 'cause Dad's lost!

JR-
I volunteered via Email to Bill C. yesterday. By the way, I'm on your roll, but I'm not much for weeknight meetings! I look forward to meeting you that Saturday.

The Kid’s Fishing Day at Jones Bridge was a roaring success. I don’t have a head count, but there were many, many kids. And an incredible number of knowledgeable moms and dads, too. I found I was helping out only when mom and/or dad were outnumbered, or if they asked for help with a knot or hook. Bunches of rainbows were caught!
The Kanooka Chapter, courtesy of Kroger, feed the mob hotdogs & chips, then held a drawing in which many, if not most, of the kids won a prize of some type of fishing equipment.
Since I am an early-to-bed, early-to-rise kinda’ guy, and a TU member for only a year, I’d never met the other chapter members. That was my loss – they’re fine folks and I enjoyed being associated with them.
In the interest of learning thru others, I offer the following. At the time the Hatchery truck was ready to unload, the manpower beside the truck was a bit underrepresented (and gray or bald!). The DNR rep (Wayne?) took out his 50’ giant hose and proceeded to squirt trout straight into the water. The salient point here is that the fish bit immediately! There was obviously less trauma & shock for the fish from their 50’ water slide than being dipped, schlepped and dropped. The initial pod of fish disbursed fairly quickly. The water at JB has more subsurface features than we had at Azalea Park, but the fish stayed in the general area of stocking.
I watched a boy who’d asked me for help with his casting land a couple of nice fish all by himself. I heard no screams, saw no blood and encountered no hostility, even though the kids and adults were packed shoulder-to-shoulder on every available rock. The moms & dads who’d taken to the water handled knot-and-hook problems near them. I saw a lotta’ smiling faces of all sizes.

I made it as well and brought my 5 year old who, other than the casting (which I did to avoid others requiring surgery), he hooked and brought in 4 bows!
I never got a chance to get up to the pavillion for dogs due to chasing my young fisherman or had a chance to meet any of the NGTO Members but if you saw me, I was the one with the Boy Scout ball cap and my son had his Angels ball cap on.
Helped a young on next to me having problems catchin' anything so I turned him on to one of my son's #18 treble hook and some of that doe bait. He came by later with a bow! I felt sorry for the lad since his Mom told him to give it to us (didn't want to actually gut and eat one)but he seemed happy enough to have caught one... That was my "Scout Deed" for the Day.
I thought all went well. Everyone was relatively courteous under the circimstances of being elbow to elbow. Would have liked to see less adults going solo at least until noon. It was the best day my son has had in a while and I'm sorry I couldn't get to introduce myself. Hope to meet you at the next gathering!
