Hi Folks! Tailwater Chapter TU and the GA Women Flyfishers would like to invite your group to do a clean up in August at Jones Bridge.
We are looking at this as a way to:[list]

concentrate our clean up efforts in one area

do a good deed for the environment and river

get some positive publicity [list/]

We know this is short notice but any participation will be appreciated. All you need to do is show up!
Thanks!

Parameters: We'll meet on the Fulton Co. side at 8:00 AM on Saturday August 19th in the lower parking lot (there is a $2.00 parking fee). We'll split up from the parking lot. Those with canoes or kayaks will hit the water and those on foot will walk the side of the river along the trails. We'll cover the area from the old steel bridge down to the boat ramp. Thanks to everyone who participated! I hope you all saw the truck load, and I mean a full size truck bed full of trash. I know that we probably hardly put a dent in the trash problem at Jones Bridge, but the fact that we want to clean the area where most of us fish is important. I love it that we don't just talk about what needs to be done - we do it! Thanks!

Thanks to everyone who made it out to Jones Bridge! Thanks, especially to the Georgia Women Flyfishers (esp., Lynn!) who helped us (Tailwater TU) put this on. It was really cooool! We had Georgia Canoe Association, Sierra Club, Cohutta Chapter TU, Chattahoochee ChapterTU, Siemans folks, NGTO, Hooked on the Outdoors Magazine (thanks guys), Ken Roberts ,Spotted Pony Trail Outfitters (set up the cooking, cooked the hotdogs, provided chairs for the weary trash pickers!).....who am I forgetting?? Thanks to all! We collected ten plus bags of trash....filled up my pick up my truck bed and dempsty dumster! We all had a great time....we'll do it again sometime.
Thanks, Pat

What a great crowd. Any idea on the total number of folks that signed up? It made it easy to get the job done as people had to compete to find trash after a while. I saw one fellow go down river with his float tube and come back with what looked like 20 lbs of rusted corregated metal roofing he had pulled from the river.

I ran into so many NGTO folks I may forget some but I remember seeing NGTO (and son), Netboy, Mark_Karacek (and son), Superchub, Bill Couch, Supergirl http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif( and hubby), Hoochrat, Debacker, William McClendon and Windknot and I think several others but I don't remember the names. I brought the little EGs knowing they would be useful in retrieving trash from the "harder to get to" places.

As Superchub said, there were folks from many different groups who pitched in.

This came in handy when the "Hooked on the Outdoors" guys raffled several Flylines to those who had signed in. One of the flylines was won by a woman who proceeded to say "What's a flyline"? Yours truly, opportunist that I am, chimed in jokingly that I would take it. Darned if she didn't offer it to me. Darned if I didn't take it http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif.

On a more painful note. I have been initiated into the "rile up a wasp's nest and see what happens" club. You would think I would be able to outrun a four year old but no http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif. They nailed me about a half dozen times.

Maybe we could do a clean-up at the area around the dam some time. I think the hotdogs are the key. Promise food a you draw a crowd http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif.

Hey William, did you catch anything after the clean-up?

Pat,

Glad to help. Shanon and I had a great time.

It was a beautiful sight to see my wife sitting in a tube for the first time. Floating down the river with a bag of garbage, pieces of deck lumber, and a fashionable plastic chair strapped to the tube. Also, I don't want to forget her constant reminder to me that "I can't stop. I can't touch bottom".

We also recovered enough tennis balls to stock wimbledon. If they had a need for waterlogged, dog gnarled balls of course.

Thanks for all the effort you put into making the event happen. We truly had fun and would love to do it again.

Enjoyed seeing everyone out there (and meeting the new people) for such a great cause. I was a bit mad that there wasn't more trash though http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif. Windknot and I had to book it ahead of everyone else. Otherwise we would have just been picking over what had already been cleaned. There was alot more trash in the river than I thought there would be though. Maybe next time we can have more boats. Overall, it was great. Thankfully, I didn't get poison ivy like I just knew I would!

I can't believe noone wanted to stay and fish though (darned husbands http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif)!
I fished for about 2 1/2 hours from the boat ramp down past the house. Didn't get any activity on a WB, but switched to a Prince nymph (thanks again Cocoon)and did pretty good. Landed 8 (on a barbless Owl!). 6 of them were the over-populated browns. Wish I would've had some company though.

A lady in my office would like to take up flyfishing again. She was lucky and had a dad who taught her a little when she was a kid. Like a whole lot of us she wants to slow down a bit and relearn the things that once grounded her and provided enjoyment. She would really appreciate a non-threatening (read patient & non-macho) way to move back into flyfishing so ...I was wondering if you'd mind if I gave her your name and email address or could you suggest someone else if that would be more appropriate.

Thanks -
