View Full Version : Late season Nymph patterns?
I commented to someone that I recently havent had much luck with nymphs. They asked which ones I was using and I told them the usual GRHE, Prince, and Tellico's were the ones I have been using since spring. They then told me that I needed some good late season nymph patterns. For some reason I did'nt inquire further. Can someone help shed some light on this for me. Patterns will be greatly appreciated. Any info will help.

Hey now,
Well late season...in the winter I usually go to pheasent tails. The are the best/one of the best BWO nymph imitations on the mkt. That and they are rather simple to tie.
The ole hares ear is hard to beat. If you tie your own, try a little flash a bou instead of the the gold ribbed. I also sometimes tie in the flash for the wing casing on the back.
I always fish prince nymphs. They are the one I prefer as bead heads. I fish them year round and they usually are reliable.
On the Hootch in the winter, I use a scud with just a bit of pink in it. I then usually drop off a nymph I used to use on the Gallatin i the fall. It consists of white dental floss wrapped around a hook, with a bit of copper wire to give it a ribbed look and a pea*****herl as the head of the fly. Simple fly to tie, and it really does work. I have no idea what the name of it is though.
But I would def look to the pheasent tails. They usually produce, and produce well through out the year (since they are mayfly imitations ). However since the only "consistent " hatch we will see for a while is the BWO's, it make s the pheasent tail a must in your box.
jeffg I totally agree with your fly selection phesant tails and prince nymphs are always good producers, however this dental floss fly of your's sounds very interesting. White is a color I like to use in the trout stream and hearl is also another of my favorite materials. What sizes do you tie this fly in and do you use a standard nymph hook or a scud hook also does this fly have a thorax ?
If this fly dosen't have a name you should give it one.
Budman,
My guess is that it looks like a maggot almost. I usually do them in size 14-18. I think the 16 usually works best. I also use gl****beads sometimes instead of or even with the pea*****herl to give it more definition around the head. Very simple fly and you can whip out a bundle of them real quick.
Oh, I would have no idea to name this thing. My guess is that somewhere out there someone has already named/photographed and given a recipe for it in some forgotten fly tying guide
Thanks jeffg i'm gonna give it a whirl as soon as I get back to my vise.
