I'm lucky enough to be going to Argentina in February.
They recommend a 6 weight & a 3 or 4 weight rod for the trip. I've got a Sage 5 wt RPL rod that I've used for years & I love dearly. This shoud suffice for the 6 wt rod as I throw a # 6 wt forward line on it. I've wanted a lighter rod for a while for the 8-10" fish I seem to catch mostly. Would I be safe to buy a Sage 4 wt RPL or even a 3 wt RPL w/a # 4 wt forward line. I'm going to the Fish Hawk next week to see what they have. Any recommendations.

Sagedoode,

I'm no expert but I would suggest that at least one of the rods you take south of the border be a travel rod. Carry it on-board with you to avoid damage, theft, or loss. Heck, carry all your rods on board if they'll let you. Also carry on your reels and vest. If your vest is bulky, you could even wear it on board. ;) Its been done! Just remember to remove any knives, snips, or other objects that could be construed as a weapon. Check as baggage the stuff you can do without like underwear, toothbrush, razor, etc.

We expect a trip report when you return! Have fun!

IF you can find one, since the nixed mfg them, look for a Sage 4 wt SP....THE BEST rod I have ever fished with! I love it more than my other sage, and use it on smaller streams more so than my 3 wt.
Fish Hawk had one on their "used closeout" stand...but who knows if it is still there.

Sageboy,

I've never fished in Argentina but I have fished alot out west. The big browns and rainbows that you will catch in Argentina are as big if not bigger than the fish out west. They reccomend fishing a heavier rod so that it will be easier for you to land those big fish without wearing the fish out too much. Also that six will be able to cast more of those big flies that are sometimes needed to lure in those lunkers. The old addage the bigger the fly the bigger the fish is often quite correct. I'm going to Brazil at the end of this month and will be there for two years. I hope I get to fish there and enjoy some South American fishing too. I think I read somewhere about some rainbows in remote argentina that were as big as golden retreivers. If thats not enough to get your heart pumping faster I don't know what will.
