View Full Version : Bloody Bloodknots
I'm trying to tie my own leaders (thanks everyone for the recipies), but the bloodknots are murder! The tools you can buy look simple. Anyone got a jig they could describe for tying these things?

Cocoon has built the ultimate tool for tying leaders - hopefully he will be offering his plans for building one on NGTO early this year.

Loren,
If Kyle is in the shop the next time you're up, ask him to show you how to tie a bloodknot. I've clocked him at 27 seconds! It takes me that long just to get the two pieces of material lined up next to each other. Which is why I tie blood knots only in the comfort of my den & use triple surgeon knots on the stream. Actually, on the smaller sections of your leader, the triple surgeon's knot is both easier & stonger than the bloodknot. On the butt sections, use the bloodknot.

Loren,
I think that some company manufactures a "bloodknot tool" that you could probably pick up at your local flyshop. Hope you enjoy and save as much cash as I do making my own leaders. Tight lines!

Loren,
I got in trouble today when Kyle came to help me take inventory. He was offended that I had told everyone he can tie a bloodknot in 27 seconds. He made me time him again; did it in 15 seconds flat! Then he tried to teach Greg Newell & me how to do it. Speaking only for myself, it may be too late to teach this old dog new tricks. I did get the technique, but the stopwatch lapped itself while I was tying one knot. Actually, it is pretty simple to do; the secret is in how you hold everything together. Years ago Henry Williamson showed me a secret way to hold a fly while tying an improved clinch knot that made a world of difference when tying on small flies. Henry's also got a special way to hold the line while tying a Duncan loop. Maybe we should put together a knot video that shows all these little tricks.
