Anybody familiar with the Bauer reels - I was looking at one in particular - their M3 model-good for a 7-8wt. They sell for about $3 and a quarter or so, but my younger brother who knows nothing about money, but a heck of a lot about flyfishing, bought an interest in West Bank Anglers (out of WY, NC, etc.) and as a result can get his flyfishing stuff at cost. An M-3 is about $195 - $225 his cost ,which is almost too good to p**** up on. any comments?

Thanks

I own an M3 I bought to go with a 9 wt Sage RPLXI & I love it. I've only fished it twice for stripers at Lanier but discovered it was the smoothest reel I own. I can't wait to hit the reds in Florida with it later this year. I just got a Sage 4 wt SPL for Christmas & plan on getting an M2 from Fish Hawk next time I'm in Buckhead for it. Guess I'll pay retail as I don't have your connections. I was in Westbank Anglers a few years ago when I fished Yellowstone & was duly impressed. Your brother should do well. If you can get a back issue of "Flyrod & Reel" magazine from last year when they gave out their Kudos awards, you'll see Bauer reels got the award in the reel division. For $200 you can't go wrong. As a matter of fact if you buy it & don't like it, email me & I'll take it off your hands.

Sageboy,

Ironic. The combination you have it what I am planning on acquiring except in a 7 wt Sage with the M3. Appreciate the reference to "Rod and Reel" - will take a look at it. Going after reds in late April, early May down at Ft. Morgan, Ala. (near Pensacola) - Lost one last year that was probably close to 20 - 25 lbs. down there. I'll let you know how it is.

Thanks.

RDC3, I haven't fished with a bauer before but have heard excellent things about them. They are supposed to be top noch. I myself deseided to save a couple of bucks and go with one of the new GL8-9-10 reel. The reels have only been on the market for a year. I wouldn't trade it for the world. It will handle pretty much anything. You should definately have a close look at these reels. The Fish Hawk Has the cheapest price of any. They were $50 cheaper than the catalogs are offering them now.

I agree with Shawn. I bought one of the loomis 8-9-10 reels from Athes Flyfishing a year ago, and have nothing but good things to say. I have caught numerous bass, seatrout, ladyfish, and spanish mackerel on the reel, and it has never skipped a beat. The drag is very smooth, and the large arbor design sucks up line like a hoover vac. I caught a 25 lb eagle ray out of the surf that took 100 yds + backing, and thee reel performed perfectly. I think it is the best deal going in fine saltwater reels.

RDC...I have a M1 and it is the best investment I have made. Very light weight and the drag system is top notch. I have even used it for steelhead fishing and it preforms with out a flaw. A best buy in my book.
