KB,

It's been my "not so professional" opinion that during the winter months, when the water temp is lower, the fish prefer slower water. I'm sure it has something to do with the trout's slow rate of metabolism during cold weather. I don't think they want to expend a lot of energy.

I concur with you that streamers tend to be the top producers during the winter, especially for big trout.

I also have good luck fishing a streamer using the "Liesenring Lift." If your not familiar:
Cast your streamer/nymph upstream at about 2 o'clock position. Keep line taunt so as to detect a strike. As your line sweeps downstream, the streamer/nymph begins a steady ascent to the surface. This typically is where I get the most strikes. The wooly booger is especially effective here. I guess the fly is simulating its "emergence" to the surface. The booger may be replicating a stonefly.

KB,
I do not fish streamers as much as I used to, but a Mickey Finn has always been a great winter fly. So has a Gray Ghost. Both are I still use. I also used one which essentially is 2 brown hackles feathers tied on the hook lengthwise, pea*****herl for a head and the body was black thread. Very simple, and very good for browns.

But as my fishing buddies and I say, when all else fails throw a bugger.
