Kent,

I live less than 4 minutes from the Flint on Hwy 362 in Pike County. Would you recommend angling for the beloved Shoal B****in this area and any ideas of flies would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Kent,

When you answer BIS' post, can you include how to tie the Helgrammite that everyone talks about. I've heard that it thrives in the gr****that's found in the rapids (like at Sprewell Bluff). And what color are these critters? I've heard white and I've heard black.

Hey Banker, I live right down the road from you. I'm in Griffin my self. Yes, you are close to some good Shoal b****action. If you know where camp thunder is you know what area has some fish in it.

Banker -
Definitely would recommend it! I fish mainly sections north of you as they're closer to me, but shoalies are all down the river (maybe even bigger your way). I fish mainly black/grizzly wooly worms dropping off a big bushy dry. Sometimes you will see hatches of enormous yellowish stoneflies, so a lot of times I'll use a muddler/stimulator/etc as a dry. Surface poppers also produce well, and in slower sections may find you a largemouth hiding away. And don't slight the bluegill, redbreast & shellcrackers - I love them, especially in the current.

Drifter, the helgrammite is a huge thing - you might need a spinning rod to throw an imitation. Black-brown, sometimes with a bit of white on the underside, you can find them (as many bait fishers do) by pulling up weeds on rocks and spreading them out. I sometimes throw a big weighted black wooly bugger - probably the closest I get to imitating the beast.

Shawn, is there any access at the camp? I've fished around there on canoe floats, but never walked in.

Prime time is coming soon, maybe even earlier this year. When y'all start planning a trip, lemme know.

Kent,

I have been able to gain access once or twice through some un-named sources... will tell you it has to do with a certain charitable organization each year which happens to own some very prime property there on the river (if you get my drift) Thunder is a beautiful place and sometimes they allow certain groups to camp from outside the BSA

Call the Flint River BSA Council in Griffin and you may have some luck with them
