As a follow up to my previous post about the right rod weight for fishing in patagonia, I would like to ask another questions.

Let me know your thoughts about the following situation.

What is the best eight weight rod for the money but regardless of the cost (i.e., if the $700 loomis rod is the best rod let me know, if the $200 St. Croix is the best let me know)

I usually prefer a moderate action rod and I want to be able to use the rod for other situations after patagonia (i.e., reds, bass, bonefish, etc.).

Thanks for the help.

Shadowcast,

Again, hard to beat that Scott SAS, 9 foot three piece for an all around performer. Good price at $290. If you're looking for a smooth, moderate action eight weight that still has plenty of power, this is your rod. Having said all that, take a close look at the Thomas and Thomas Horizon series 908-4. It list about $560. Simply an unbelievable rod, outstanding power with smoothness. It's faster in action than the Scott, and has to be cast to be believed. The build quality is first rate. If money is no object, buy the Thomas and Thomas, but the Scott is not too far behind and is half the price, so you decide.

I've been pleased with my Diamondback "All American". 150 bucks at Fish Hawk. It was hard for me to justify spending more for a rod that I don't use that much.
