First of all, i was wondering how far up you all recommend putting a splitshot in relation to the nymph or wooly bugger. Also, I have noticed that almost all of the fish which I lose are lost directly downstream from me. Is this a common occurance, or could i be doing something wrong? Thanks.

Roffwarg:

The split shot recommendation is 8-10 inches above the fly.

As for losing fish downstream, I guess that depends on how you were fishing (upstream or down). If you hooked up upstream and the fish runs down, the slack in the line when they get past you will frequently result in a loss (for you, a win for the fish!). If you hooked up downstream then it could be that the hook position in the fish's mouth is such that holding your rod high and vertical (instead of more to the side) simply pulls the hook out.

Try keeping your rod position at something less than vertical and see if you keep them.

They don't say "tight lines" for nothing!

What a long strange trip it's been...

Thanks Knot Trying. I was always told to keep the rod tip up but i guess when the fish is downstream like that, i need to angle it more like you said. I appreciate the advice.
