Does anyone have any experience fishing in South Africa? I'm headed there on vacation for a couple weeks, spending most of my time around Cape Town and Johannesburg.

Thanks for any information.

Go to www.smallstreams.com (http://www.smallstreams.com) and ask the same question. There is a guy, Gerald I think, who lives and fishes there all year long! Hope you have a good time, and catch one for us...

Tim Chambo at Orvis in Buckhead has a book about fishing in S. Africa that one of the S. African Air pilots gave to him. I'm sure he'll let you browse through it.

"Fish and Fly" magazine has an article on fishing in Africa in their new issue, im guessing Feb. 2004. On the cover is a nice size Tiger fish.

Hi CarpCatcher

I'm originally from South Africa and can give you lots of advice on flyfishing there - if you haven't left already! I just returned from a vacation in SA. Contact me via email (usfishing@afrikanuts.com) if you still need help - I can even lend you some books on where to fish and what to expect. The following websites might also help (in no particular order): http://www.icon.co.za/~entrepot/saflydir.htm http://www.ffsa.co.za http://www.flyshop.co.za http://www.theflyguide.com http://www.africanfishing.com http://www.flyfishingafrica.net

Cape Town have great opportunities for trout, bass, saltwater and other indigenous fish and even some carp. Depending on the weather (it's now high summer there) opportunities might be a bit more limited as Cape Town is in a winter rainfall area and it might be a bit dry.
Johannesburg is not that great for flyfishing for trout, but yellowfish (and indigenous species) is great fun in summer. Joburg is also a comfortable drive (2-3 hours) from a lot of great trout fishing destinations in the MPumalanga province (towns such as Belfast, Machadodorp, and Dullstroom)
Hope this isn't to late!
Regards
DDD
