Does anyone know of a good website that gives detailed descriptions of how to tie patterns. Not just the materials used but the directions. Thanks for your help.

Try this one http://www.magiclink.com/web/wesn/

Many different patterns, good directions.

If I find any more, I'll post them,

ALG -- Try http://www.troutnet.com. It should provide links to half a dozen flytying sites some of which are very good with descriptions, tying instructions and photos or drawings and some which are poor with nothing but a list of materials. Can't remember which ones to recommend.

Also, I've found some good sites using Yahoo to search for "fly tying."

ALG -- Decided to check my bookmarks for flytying sites per your request. Here's what I came up with:

Group 1

Site Address

Flytying database: nfinity.com/~hawk/fly/
Twin River Anglers: www.traflyfish.com/tying/
tyirres.htm
Midwest Flytyer: www.mwflytyer.com/index.htm
Angler's Inn: www.anglersfly.com
Flyman's Realm: www.webspan.net/~dsikora/
Virtual Flyshop: www.flyshop.com/Bench/
archive-index.html
Basic Flytying: www.mindspring.com/~smarc
Wes' Virtual Pattern Book: www.magiclink.com/
web/wesn/
Group 2

Site Address
Hook & Hackle: www.hookhack.com/index.html
Old Smoky Outfitters: www.thesmokies.com/
oldsmoky_outfitters/index.htm

Group 3

Baglo's Flies
Angler's Diary

Group 1 is composed of sites which have material lists and/or tying instructions and illustrations or photos for most of the flies. The last one is probably the best, but each site offers patterns that the others don't have.

Group 2 sites are basically limited in one way or another. Hook & Hackle offers a simple list of materials with no instructions or illustrations. Old Smokey Outfitters offers outstanding basic tying instructions with superb drawings but only one pattern. The flytying workshop is almost a must for a beginner and is by our own Derek Porter.

ADDENDUM:

Group 3 sites were very good ones which seem to have disappeared from the web. If anyone knows where they might be, please post.

I assumed that everyone knows to put http:// in front of the address.

I checked all of the sites listed and all but two are still operating. If you don't get through, it's possible that I have a type in the listing but you should be able to find the site with a web search.
