View Full Version : fly box organization
Going through my flies and trying to get them organized, I wondered how others manage this. I've been doing it for a lot of years and have never been totally satisfied with the results. Am now attempting to do it by the streams and types of streams I fish the most often. I am determined to fish lighter and like most fly fishermen have collected one heck of a lot of flies that I don't use and some I can't even identify. Tight Lines

A couple of years ago, my entire fishing collection of lures, flies, rods, and reels were stolen. When I started to replace the tackle, starting with the flies, I replaced the flies that I use the most. My original list was somewhere around 30 different flies, including the different sizes of flies. My assortment today is around 50 different types and sizes, all kept in a Richardsons chestflybox (with three compartments).
Most of my fishing is done here in the Southern Appalachians. When I do go out West
I still use the flies from my chestflybox and sometimes a couple of local favorites for the streams or rivers I'm fishing.
I generally keep all my flies organized by common types, but I always keep two small boxes in my vest, one dry and one wet. The flies in those boxes always change, depending on where I've been fishing. That seems to work pretty well with me. All the flies just kind of rotate in and out with my habits.

After all my years of flyfishing I find myself becoming a minimalist (lazy?) the less I have to carry the better I like it. I have found that I tend to use basically the same flies no matter where I go. I usually only carry two fly boxes one for nynphs and one for dries. Most of the time I don't even wear my vest anymore I use one of those Wood River boxes that you can throw over your shoulder, I even pushed a shower curtian clip thru the strap and attach my net to it.
