Hey Jeff i have used the cdc and i think it's some pretty good stuff. It floats well by itself (don't use floatant it causes it to sink, i think). I tye it in on smaller size drys and emergers because it's easier to use than hackle i think. Try also using it as a dubbing it makes neat bodies that float well.

jeffg,
i posted about this stuff before and like it better for wets than dries--because it holds air bubbles, which are in my opinion one of the bigger keys for feeding fish. One of my best producing flies is a CDC EHC---If I don't draw strikes as a dry I sink it and strip it and watch my line tighten. I always catch more under the surface or in the film rather than high and dry, but, like most, I prefer high and dry--so I start that way.

I like it best as legs on nymphs. Instead of the brown hackle on a prince, wrap a CDC feather once. You only need a couple of barbules. Too many and it has a tendency to float. You can also tie a small clump under the throat. I think the CDC has more action underwater than regular hackle. Do not use the puff CDC for this. Use the feathers with the straight barbules.I think the puff CDC is better used on emerger patterns.

I got the idea from the Kauffmans catalog.
They sell several nymphs that are tied using CDC.
