I am looking to buy a new vise and was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. Something reasonably priced.

Briggs,

I've been tying with a "Thompson Model A" for years. I think I paid 30-something dollars for it way back when? I think you can get them now for under $50.
Is it the best? No.
Is it the cheapest? No.
Does it work? Yes
Does it last? Yes
Am I satisfied? Yes.

If money is the main criteria, Hook and Hackle has a vise called the "AA" for $12.95 less 20% if you order from their online catalog at:
http://www.hookhack.com

Check with Jimmy at www.unicoioutfitters.com (I think) He may be able to "hook" you up! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/wink.gif

Usual disclaimers apply, YMMV,

I agree with Dr. Drifter. I have a couple of vises and love the old standard "Thompson A." Now, I'd really like a rotary, but it's hard to justify the extra bucks. My Thompson cost less than $40.

I received mine as a hand-me-down. It is a thompson as well. It gets the job done, but I like the rotary idea as well. Thanks for your input.

I've used the Model "A" since the early 80's, I think it is a great vise. I recently got a rotary, the DanVise, for about $75. Not too much more than a standard vise. I like it a lot. But, and this is a big but, if you are just getting started, learn to tie well on a standard vise then consider a rotary. I also hear some good things about the Griffin vises.

I just started tying in the spring and afer much debate decided to go with the Renzetti 135 dollar rotary model. I learned on it and therefore may be used to it, but when I tried to use a different model I found myself very happy to shell out the extra bucks. I feel that you will end up with the renzetti anyways so spend the extra money now. You won't regret it.

Renzetti Traveler is definitely a great vise. You may or may not use the rotary tying, but it sure is nice to be able to flip and look at the other side of the fly.
