Does anyone know of a site with a diagram on how to tie the whip finish knot using the tool that has the revolving handle.(the one that spins within the handle. Thanks for any help.

Bruce,
The site I'm about to suggest provided a good description of whip finishing by hand - without using a tool. Sorry I don't have the URL but do a search for Martin Joergensen's Flyfishing Denmark page and look under the articles heading. There's a boatload of good info on Martin's page.

If what you are trying to use is a matarellie (sp) whip finisher try this: with the thread hanging down take the whip finisher in your right hand and hook your thread with the top hook (your whip finisher should be parallel to your fly) now bring your thread bobbin (left hand) to the notch in the rear of the whip finisher go over the top of it and to the back of the fly if you have done it right the thread at the front hook of your whip finisher will go over the thread going to your bobbin as you rotate the whip finisher around the head of the fly. Make 6 turns disconnect the front hook pull the thread tight and trim. It's much easier than all this sounds.
Good Luck

Bruce,
If your learn to tie the whip without the tool, and practice often, you'll never even want to use it.

Bruce..if you can make it up to the Trout Primer (not sure where you live) I'll show you how to use the tool (I'll be there until ~noon) but like KB says if you learn to do it w/o you'll probably never use one...as a novice tier someone gave me a tool...being a gadget person I was (sorry) hooked..heck if it had blinkin lights I would have bought the bigest and most expensive..Last time I fished with Flyguy and Hooker they had to keep slapping the pretty lures out of my hands and make me fish!! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif Lord help me if I ever pull out Kents Clouser Minnow!! I'll never get it wet!

Superchub:
Thanks for the response on the Whip finish Knot. I think you have me convinced to do it without the tool(Just another gadget to worry about). Won't be up in Feb for the primer but do plan to be in the Helen Area the end of March beginning of April. Hope I get a chance to meet you some time.
Like Superchub I am a lover of gadgets, I even learned to programm my VCR, but I love my whipfinish tools ( I belive they make a neater head). I use both kinds and the Tompson tool can't be beat for dry flies, you won't tie down nearly as much hackle with it.
Thanks BT for the added input. I will be prepared to do it either way when necessary.
It is always best to know the alternative method when you are in need of it.
