KB,
The terrestial swap sounds great, but I can barely tie my shoes! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/biggrin.gif Guess I will have to rely on store bought flys for now.

Chunker,
One of the purposes of the Swap is to encourage fishermen to tie their own flies.
I have tied more flies this winter than previous winters. You can start out small and learn to tie a few patterns fairly quickly. Nymphs tend to be easiest to tie. If you hunt or know someone who does, you can scam some free materials, ie, deer hair, squirrel, rabbit, duck, quail, etc. Heck, you can even pick up some road kill.
Anyhow....if you get the chance, start tying and come join the Swaps. It'll add a whole new dimension to your fly fishing.

Drifter,
Have had the urge to try to tie before, and have read some of the postings conserning it. When looking through magizines showing tying materials it seems overwhelming to see all the materials and tools offered.Any suggestions on where to start? It must be very rewarding to catch a fish on a fly you tied.
Chunker,
I just started tying recently myself and it is very rewarding catching a fish on a fly you tied yourself. My advice would be to keep it simple. Pick a couple of patterns that you like and ties those. Many of the flies that look complicated are really just a combonation of techniques that are use to tie the simple ones. Also check out this site http://flyanglersonline.com click on the section for beginners. It is a great place to get started with patterns, tools, materials and techniques. Al Campbell is the instructor and is always willing to answer any questions you may have.

Chunker,
Your biggest expense will be the vice and capes (rooster necks with long thin hackles). A good vice can be had for less than $50 and you can get a #2 grade 1/2 cape for about $25. If you stick with hackle-less flies at first, you don't need a cape. That's why some nymphs are good to learn on. You can also tie certain caddis flies with just dubbing and deer hair.
Don't buy all your stuff at once if you want to save money. Go to a good fly shop and tell the proprietor that you want to tie a certain pattern and buy the materials for just that pattern. If you buy a "fly tying kit" you may end up with some stuff you'll never use.
Jimmy Harris (Unicoi Outfitters)has put together a kit that contains materials for flies in our area. I've heard good things about his kit so this might be a route you want to look at.
Lastly, make sure you attend the next NGTO Fly Fling. Many members bring their equipment and I'm sure they wouldn't mind giving you a crash course at their vise.
Good luck,

Chunker....my suggestion..Get yourself a good basic Tool kit (basic vice like a Thompson AA, scissors, bobbin, hackle pliers,...Unicoi Outfitters or Fish Hawk, depending where you live can help you with this) Initially I would suggest NOT buying any materials except some 3/0 black, white and tan thread. Here is the fun part..come to the next NGTO fly fling and let some of us show you some basic tying..and also you can look at the myriad of materials that we all use...I would be more than happy to share enough material (continuing a noble tradition passed on to me by Steve Hudson who graciously sent me a care package of basic materials just after I started tying)to get you tying a few flys. Then make a list of what you need and buy the minimum to start, trust me before long you will accumulate enough stuff to tie for several hundred years! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif

Chunker,
I hope they'll be happening every month.
But, there is still room left in this one, and you have plenty of time.
You should try your local liabrary for books on fly tying. I'm not sure what system you live in, but the Gwinnett system has some very good resources.

Sounds like we need to get a Fly Fling going. I read a post where some one had a place t tie and offered to get a fly tying session going. If he/she coild drop me an e-mail I would be glad to get something rolling.

Thank you, everyone for your advice and words of encouragement on tying flys. Have printed out your recomendations cause Lord knows I'll never remember them all. How often are the fly swaps held? I am anxious to attend the next one. Thanks again.

Is there any room left in the Terrestrial swap? I came up with the idea and threw it out there, only to come home from being out of town for a week to find it's down to one space left! I hope I can still get in. Put me down if there is still an opening.
KB, I tried to get on the web page, but nothing is there yet. Let me know if I'm in or not. Thanks.
