Those are some good looking bugs. I too have had the idea of using old flip flops but I have a problem you will be able to answer for me.

How do you attach the foam to the shank? I have not tried bugs as large as yours (but soon will. I have used super glue on my small bugs and it holds ok.

Best method I've found is to wrap hook well with thread, then with dubbing or thin chenille, and then saturate the material with glue before sliding on bug body. You can cut a slot in base of body w/hacksaw blade for the hook. My preferred method is to "drill" hole thru body w/ a heated bodkin needle. Test the hole on the wrapped hook before applying the glue.
