Loren asked for advice yesterday on leaders for use with Clousers. What do you use? Mine is secret-cause yall wouldn't like it. BTW, just got my new Fly Fish'man Mag today and has good article on tying Clousers and about Bob "The Man" himself.

My dad lives in York, Pa, which is about a half hour south of Harrisburg, where Bob lives. He has actually fish with Bob a couple of times. Anyway, another great fly he ties that is not as well known as the minnow is the clouser crayfish. If you ever get your hands on one, use it because it is deadly.

Ol Man -
You irreverrent ol dog, I bet you use a level leader, of say, 16 lb test, no tippet. Whoever heard of a real flyfisher not using a tapered leader!!

I'm a bit irreverent, myself, & don't think leader is of max importance with clouser. I don't actually use a level leader, as I like a fat butt section to turn over the weighty clouser. But, I'll tie it on to what's left of my tapered leader, or if it's too short , maybe tie on a 0x or 1x tippet. Don't think fish being leader shy is question, as if I'm fishing shallow I'm fishing fast or I'm fishing deep - in both instances, tippet size less important. A possible exception would be deep pool in clear mountain stream where I might go down in tippet size.

In warmwater fishing I don't think fish are especially leader shy - leader & tippet size have more to do with the depth at which I want to fish (longer, smaller tippets let the fly sink quicker & further) and with the action of the fly. I do normally use a loop knot to attach clouser so action is not impaired by tippet. With clousers, I change size/weigh to change depth.

Caveat to all this is that clouser is really many different flies. I tie them from 1" #8 with tiny bead-chain eyes to 6" 2/0 with huge dumbell eyes. Obviously, this calls for different leader set-ups.

Now, tell us the truth, Ol Man. You know that we here on this board love to hear stuff we don't like - so we can jump all over your a$!*.

You've got my number, except I think my spool of mono is 15#. Hear a hard nylon like mason works good as is stiffer. I've read about some bonefish guides using that. You know all the tricks do'nt you. I save those cut back leaders too. Use em up with tippets and then save em for Clousers and b****bugs.

Ole Man -
I knew I had you pegged as soon as I read your 1st post - been laughing all weekend `bout it and waiting for your confirming post. What a travesty!

BTW, Carter Nelson is working with the Fish Hawk now, so say hello when you're in. If you like to throw b****bugs, ask him about his "Chili Ribbet".

Sure hated to fess up, but knew you would have me cornered. Glad to hear Carter is at the Fish Hawk now. They got a *****good one when they got him. He will be a real asset. I will give him a call, as I need a few tying items and he will know exactly what I'm looking for. Will ask about getting a "Chili Ribbit" too. Thanks for the leader info, will try to repent and follow the straight and narrow.
