View Full Version : Anyone want a vice?
I just bought a D.H. Thompson "A" that makes me want to throw rocks at my old "kit" vice. If anybody wants to try fly tying and needs something to hold a hook, I'll give you a vice. It's not much at all, but it works. All I ask is that if you try it and don't like it, p****it on to someone else on the board, if you love tying as I do and buy a new vice, p****it on to someone on the board. E-mail me if you want it. J. Byrd
Nice offer, J. Byrd. Hope someone takes you up on it.
I ended up with 2 vises in exactly the same way - bought a kit and then a Thompson A. Occasionally my son and I tie together, so I use both. I have had some disappointments the the Thompson, however. It's holding power is not what I had on the kit vise but is usually adequate. I bent the pin trying to tighten it. But, still, it gets the job done.
Who said their daughter was tying now....Icthus ? http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif Great thing to do , JBird ! You a good man.
I also bought new vise and I have 2 to p****on to someone under same conditions. One is kit vise and one is Thompson entry vise.

Yeah, our younger one loves to tie flies. She caught her first fish a couple of weeks ago on one she tied. Major excitement!

BeeDub, how old is your daughter and how old was she when she began Fly Fishing? My daughter is six and I am not sure when and how to start her FF.

J Byrd,
I asked my 11 year old today. She said she would love to have her own vise. If you still have it , let me know. This way we can tie together. If she loses intrest or we decide to step up, I will definately p****it along in the same manner.

Michael,
Sorry to be so long answering. I've been on vacation. (At least part of it included some fishing - and catching.) To answer your question, she's sixteen and, like me, just started fly fishing this year. She enjoys crafts and making things and became interested in tying as soon as I started it. I wish my first flies looked as good as hers. Fishing was a natural follow-on. She's old enough to be patient and understand that fishing does not always mean catching. From what some of the others on this board have written about starting children off early, I'd say you might want to consider a "sure thing" to start with - maybe either a trout pond or a heavily stocked location, using bait. Let her enjoy some immediate success. Or you might just simply try taking her along with you on a regular trip. Chances are good, if you're buddies, she'll want to do everything Dad does! Be attentive to her mood and needs, though. Children get hungry and tired faster than you and I do. Let her set the pace and say when she's ready to eat or call it quits for the day. None of that "major dad, suck-it-up-and-bear-it, this is how it's done" stuff! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif Congratulations. Sounds like you've got a great fishing buddy coming up! I doubt you'll ever find a more loyal one!!!
Sounds like a well informed Dad to me! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif Go Beedub, Go Beedub..... http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif
I see a lot of folks have extra tying vices around. I know a great non-profit group that sure could use them to teach kids to tie. The Galcier Institute http://www.digisys.net/glacinst/ is on the Flathead River in Montana. I was just there, and they were scrambling for tying equipment. If you have one you want to send them, you can mail it to this address:
The Glacier Institute c/o RJ Devitt
137 Main Street
PO Box 7475
Kalispell MT 59904
It may not be local, but it is a great organization and they would be apprecaited and used! Thanks- Y2J
