What days are you going up to the hiwassee?? I will be there on sat and will probably be there on sun also, Hope that it's a good weekend and the fish are hungry.
caddis_fly_1 and ironchunker will be in the area also, but am not sure on the time schedule as of now. Looks like we may have a good group up there this weekend should be fun.

Are there places to camp nearby?

We were also planning on floating (in tubes) from the powerhouse on down to either the bridge or the small park on the right side of the river. First, is that a good idea, if we have never been on that stretch before? Second, are you guys getting back to the put in?

if it is your first time on the hiwassee you might want to stop by Hiwassee outfitters fly shop and pick up some pointers on floating the Hiwassee and if youd like meet up with me at Reliance Fly and Tackle this sat. around 9 but if not be carefull they have been running two generators most regulars on the Hiwassee are veryfreindly and will be more than willing to give you any assistance that they can so remmber saftey first

Thanks for the advice toadfrog. We are coming from Atlanta, so for us to be there by 9am, we'll have to get moving pretty early, I don't want to hold you guys up.

Hopefully we'll find you on the river, we will stop by the outfitters to find the latest tricks and secrets (I hope) been there acouple times before, to stop and and say hi. Nice people!

hey guys ,
I will be at RFT at 9 or so. I will have my tube and possibly an extra one. The section from the power house to towee is a good trip and not to hard of a float. there are a couple of rapids that you go through the best thing to do is to turn aroud backwards and lean back in the tube, that way you don't catch your legs on rock and get hung up. As far as camping goes gee creek is a good place it's right off of 411 hwy just on the other side of the 411 bridge , turn left on the road after savannah resturant( or whatever it's called now ) and it's down on the right. I like gee because you don't have to worry about your gear in your tent's while you are gone.
I will be driving a blue plymoth voyager with a sage sticker on the back window. c-Yall up there
oh yeah, you will probably find me at gee if i do end up camping and the resturant has pretty good food to and is only a couple of hundred yards from camp. Roughin it smoothly is the name of the game.

caddis_fly_1,

Check the archives for previous threads about float tubing the Hi. Rule number 1: Wear a life vest! (I don't recommend an inflatable vest for float tubing the Hiwassee.)

flytyinfisherman is right, the Powerhouse to the Boat Ramp, or Boat Ramp to Towee is a good intro-float. It's about a 1 mile walk back to your car from Towee to the Boat Ramp. You can spend as much time (all day if you want) on one of those routes and not be whipped when you're through.

Fair warning: Boat Ramp to the bridge in a float tube could take 6 to 8 hours or more and you will be a cold, tired puppy when you finish. As a bonus, right when you're the most tired and cold, you'll hit the most dangerous rapids. If you really want to go all the way, I suggest you rent a raft from Hiwassee Outfitters or hire one of their guides.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info everyone. I think I'll just stick around the powerhouse to the boat ramp. I remember once on the Ami during the DH me and a buddy floated from Steel Bridge to Hwy 53, what we thought would take 4 hours turned into about 8-9 hrs. It was dark when we finished, we were cold and tired!

I might be up there around 10, I'll be in a yellow wrangler with TU tags from GA. Otherwise a black Jeep Cherokee. Hollar if you see us.

Is it manditory to wear a life jacket if your just wading and not floating? How about wt rod?

See you fellas soon!

Looking forward to it. Sadly, we can't be up there early - I've got to wait for the phone repairman and their anytime from 8-noon crap. Soon as they finish we'll be on our way.

A life vest is legally required when in a boat or float tube. A wading staff and an inflatable vest are not bad ideas when wading.

I use rods from 3wt through 6wt on the Hi.
