Thought I would share this tale with you guys and gals. Aaron, Steve, my daughter and I fished Jones Bridge yesterday (stream report posted). Unfortunately lost track of Steve...it was a little cold and I suspect he headed for the car!
I received a fly tying setup for Chrismas and had tied a couple flys for the trip. The first a rainbow prince (Jimmy thanks for the recipe), kind of my version since I had never seen one, and the second fly the wooly brown killer (this is my entry in the fly swap so I thought I had better try it out and work out the bugs before mailing it in!) Both were barbless and beadhead. We entered the water at the observation deck on the Fulton Co. side. I was fishing my wooly brown killer with the rainbow prince as an 18" dropper. The third cast across the run, about 100feet below the observation deck, I hooked a small brown. What a rush...my first fish on my own tie! It was like Christmas again waiting to see which fly the fish had taken. A couple feet away I could see the rainbow prince securely hooked into the upper jaw. The WBK also worked as expected illiciting a chase and attack responce. I caught two more on the WBK and missed > http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/frown.gif at least six more. Aaron was the numbers man and caught six with the last a 14" brown on the WBG. Aaron had some kind words on my first tying try, which was music to my ears coming from one of the "old" pros!! Flyguy once told me that the first fish caught on a fly you have tied is quite rewarding....he is right on. My daughter missed two using the WBK and the rainbow prince...she was staying busy checking out her new float tube and was surprised each time she got a hit..also not used to barbless hooks and the short 5' rod! Spinner, she was throwing the flys with my UL rig (shimano stimula rod with a quantum reel). Even with the flys that rig will toss it about fifty feet...works fine form a float tube working close in.
Sorry about my verbosity (that's for you Rod, being my mentor in the field of piscatorial eloquence! > http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif but I wanted to share a great day on the water.
Peace, happiness and prosperity in the New Year!

SC,

Congrats on your fly tying success. You have just added another rewarding demension to the flyfishing experience. Good report also.
May you never have to fish with another "store bought" fly.

Great day using the first of your own flies. Congrats. I have heard of a guy that used to fish Water's creek with a spinning rod and flies, he used a small clear bobber to add enough weight to cast the small flies he fished with. I was told that he had caught more "keepers" than anyone on that particular creek.

Budman...Thanks for the info...I am going to go and buy a couple clear bobbers if I can't get that flyrod to work...Spinner..

To the Spinfishingdudes,

A few years back (about 30) I used to fish with an ultralight spinning reel with four pound test line and dry flies. I would take an old trashed floating Rapala and whittle the lip off. Also removed the treble hooks. Tie the Rapala on your line, and then tie a 5 or 6 foot "tippet" to the rear eye of the Rapala. Then tie your fly of choice on the end of the tippet. This rig put a major dent in the bream population of my favorite farm pond. It could probably be done on the Hooch as well. 'Course the first time a 20" green trout hits the hookless Rapala, you guys will be cursin' me http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/wink.gif

Budman,
I've used the clear bobber setup you described. In Colorado, it's popular for lake fishing for trout. I've yet to find the best bobbers around here. Walmart sells a fillable one with a rubber tube and I've bought solid bubbles. The best are light and have a plastic stopper for filling and threading line.

I told a guy at work about this method and he brought me a couple of clear bobbers, approx. 1" oval shaped said he got them at Sports Town or whatever that sporting goods place is over near Town Center mall.

I picked up a couple of those bobbers in Colorado a few years back. These are the small football shaped with the stopper so you can adjust the amount of water in therm and thereby adjust the bouyancy. It definitely helps you toss the flys a lng way and the adjustable depth allows you to float just in the film/subsurface which sometimes does the trick...have fun experimenting!!!
