What a geat day. Owl and I stopped by the Wally Word for my license and Owl's "Bob the Dog" hat. We made it to the water around 8 or so. It was 34 degrees and the water was 42 or so. The day started off a bit slow (and very cold), but I caught my first ever Brookie on a #20 mosquito. He wasn't huge, but very nice. We moved around a bit and used the heater in the truck to prevent hypothermia. I caught two more nice Browns on a lightning-bug foam beetle. At this time I was out-fishing Owl! That didn't last long. We then went to the Slick Tree Pool and proceded to catch 20 or more fish. They seemed to be hitting on the top, but Owl was catching them on a soft hackle. Finally they started taking wooly buggers as well. It seemed like every cast produced a beautiful Brookie or a nice Brown. Just as I thought I would freeze to death, I noticed the back of a huge Brookie coming out of the water as he sipped from the top. I gave Owl instructions on where he was and what lane to throw to. Fifth cast or so, he hooked him, but he quickly (5 sec.s or less) got off. It was then my turn. I hung a black crystal wooly booger in his face for quite awhile. Finally I moved into the middle of the river (waste deep in really COLD water) and after 5 or so minutes I hooked him. This was a monster! He rolled and flopped about as I made my way to the bank. After a minute or so, he came off. ARRRGGGHHH! He was at least 24" or more! We moved around some more and I caught a real nice 18" Brook.
I landed him on the "Sky Hopper" that I tied for the swap. We fished our way back to the Slick Tree Pool and caught several more. I thought I saw the 24" boy still out there, but it was actually a really nice Rainbow. Owl eventually landed this guy. I'll let him tell you how big he was. Overall a great day with over 50 fish between the two of us. I'll be back! Pictures to follow.

Sounds like you guys did great. Where was the Wally World you got you license at? Any flyshops up that way?

The Walmart is in Murphy. It's right on the side of the road. Hard to miss I think. I don't know of any fly shops up there, but I'm sure Grizz will know.

The closest flyshop is in Bryson City about 20 miles east of the river. It is called The Kingfisher and is very well stocked.

Don't forget the Nantahala Outdoor Center store. NOC is on the left just under 8 miles downriver from the generating station. You can't miss it. Fly supplies are tucked away in a back corner on the second floor. They usually have a pretty good selection of popular flies as well as an assortment of gadgets and several rods.
