Amicalola Creek, commonly referred to as the Ami, is a great place to fish. DNR recently stocked 12 inch rainbow trout that have a passion for fighting! The location is beautiful and the access is very easy. I think that there are 2 miles of delayed harvest (artificial only, single hook, catch/release from October ?? – May 14) stream water between Steele Bridge (on Steele Bridge Road) and the Highway 53 bridge.

There were folks from the Georgia Women Flyfishers fishing the Ami all weekend and then some! Karen, Jo Lynn, and Janet all fished Friday. Rumors heard were that soft hackle hare’s ears were the ticket. Karen tells me that she lost track of how many fish were caught that day.

On Saturday, Beth, Susan, Becky, and Metrela fished. Cone headed brown woolly boogers were the fly of choice for the day. We all agree that it is worth your time to park at the Steele Bridge and walk in for a while before you start fishing. Fishing pressure is heavy close to the parking lots. Bring your polartec’s too, the water and the air temps are about the same.

Today (Monday), Becky, Dave (spouse of a GaWomFly), and Beth fished, parking at the Steele Bridge. Saw fish all day, but around 2:30pm, they started slamming the top of the water, apparently taking emergers. There were insects all around. Now, to our amateur eyes, we saw what we thought were mayflys (huge – 2 inches from tip to tail), midges (white), and caddis (brown/grey). A fly fisherman’s dream! For about, Becky and Beth saw some nice top water action. It was a President’s Day well spent.

Notice that each day it was a different fly. Interesting how it is not the same each day!

Hey Flygal ! I was hoping the AMi would produce some bugs. Even in the cooler air of Jan. , downstream of the Steel Bridge, there were small midge like thingies. Caddis you say? My fav! http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/smile.gif Glad to hear you guys did so well. Haven't been there since the last truck-run, and since it;s been a week or almost two, guess I'll wait til next time. http://www.georgia-outdoors.com/ubbngto/wink.gif
Hate fishing empty water, ya know. I have a question if you don't mind. When you say walk in from Steel Bridge.............did you go further than the last loggin road.....I mean where you guys bushwacking back where there was no trail? If you'd rather not say, I totally understand.

Thanks
