As origionally told to Owl via email:
Check this out, please don't cry: My neighbor 2 houses down is moving to
Texas, and left a large pile of crud out for the garbageman. Yesterday my
wife noticed some fishing rods among the stuff, and called me to tell me
what she saw. I was close to home, so came home for lunch, and to look at
the rods (of coarse). Along with some old spincaster stuff was the always
dreamed of "old fly rod sock"! I snatched it up, took it in the house, and
opened my imagined treasure. Inside I found a 3 piece Montague bamboo rod,
9 foot (?), complete with a spare tip. All 4 pieces are intact, no guides
missing, label 75% complete, and cork and hardware in very nice condition.
The first stripping guide has been knocked a little cockeyed and repaired,
and one of the tips is slightly warped, but other than that it is what
appears to me to be very good condition. There is no rust or missing chrome
on any of the ferrules, the wraps all appear to be origional, as do the
guides. Since I know that you also own (still?) one of these, do you have
any suggestions on any Web resources to research when it may have been made
(other than the obvious NGTO goldmine)? I'm very excited, I always wanted
one of these, but cannot afford to buy a rod just to say that I have one.
I'm like you, if it cost money, I'm fishing with it. I am actually tempted
to fish this once just to see what it's like, it seems very stable and
durable. I wish it also had the tube, but since I already feel like I won
the lottery, I should count my lucky stars. This baby is going on the wall,
with an old reel I got off Ebay last year, to be admired, as it really is
beautiful (and my wife will let me, as opposed to my suggestion to hang a
mounted fish).
I wonder if the next February 29th will be as good to me?
